gr8gatzby
I noticed last week that my AWD is now FWD, as evidenced by my multiple random peelouts and lessened stability in inclement conditions. Fuel economy has shot up a couple mpg's, methinks because of this, and the car is faster. For the first 10 minutes on the road from a cold start, there is a hum that incrementally increases with speed. After 10 or so minutes, the hum disappears completely, but there is a constant and very uber-mild sound that is like small ball bearings being shaken in a tin can. If the car sits even for 2 hours after the initial run, the hum does not return until the next morning. I'm assuming that these shenanigans are the point of failure in the AWD system. I am absolute poor white trash right now, or I wouldn't still be driving it in this state. However, these do not appear to be getting worse. Am I doing additional damage to the car by driving it? Please say it ain't so...
DHV70
It sounds like something happened to the angle gear or drive shaft. Did you hear some sort of clank or hit an incredible bump at some point? haha
yangotang
Sounds like an angle gear. You may want to pull the driveshaft to run the car FWD only.
gr8gatzby
How difficult is it to pull the driveshaft, and will the hum and mild clanking cease if I do so? How much does an angle replacement run at an indie shop, or is it something that a shadetree mechanic like me can do...

flyfishing3
14 bolts to remove DS not very difficult. lift car off ground. remove two bolts, turn drive shaft. remove two bolots, turn drive shaft. repeat i can't think of the socket needed but nothing special. air tools would make it easier but not required. i removed mine and its good but i want AWD for the winter. i have a new DS sitting in my garage. 450-650 for a rebulit one. gr8gatzby
6mm allen OK got the 6mm bit, the driveshaft appears to be in 2 separate 3ish foot pieces connected in the middle. My dad says I should need to remove a wheel, but if so, which one? any input? To turn the shaft, can I do so by hand with the tranny in neutral? Shadetree newb here, thanks for the help.
