Help With Buying A V70R...Some Qs?

Hey guys, so hopefully I can get some help here with a 98' v70r for my girl. We test drove the car and checked everything out and for the price it seems like a decent deal. 96K Saffron, new brakes, tan interior, overall good condish.Couple things we noticed, some I am unsure of what the costs might be to fix down the road but anyways...

-Failed emissions...Obviously can't tell without digging into the car a bit...however it was running a bit fuel rich? I'm thinking it may just need a good tune up?

-Antifreeze smell from vents, although coolant tank looks good and did not see any leaks inside or out, clean oil as well. My thought was a bad heater core...but at the same time if the heater core was replaced at one point in time wouldn't it still smell like antifreeze??

-Center of dash has some type of fans behind it that seem to make an annoying buzzing noise? Obvious answer would be to replace them but I am hoping someone can give me a bit of info...

While I am searching for more info I hope you guys could chime in and give me a hand so maybe we could pull the trigger on this one. Thanks in advance! Oh btw...the reward for helping is obviously me putting pics up of my girl with her new car.

Anti freeze smell from vents... heater core problem (light steam coming from the vents, hard to notice) I agree thats the problem.

If it failed emissions then the sheet should say why it failed, that can help diagnose it. Also, how do you know it's running rich? Smell, sight or the emissions sheet? Or hell, A/F meter hooked up? When I had vacuum leaks on my 98 T5 I got code 171, engine lean, not rich, however on my supra if I get a vacuum leak it runs rich and starts shooting out fireballs, so somewhere in the middle may be the answer...intercooler hoses! No matter what, when/if you get the car do a stage 0, may fix everything emissions related.

I had an odd dash sound, buzz almost, turns out it was a loose bracket vibrated by my inner cv going bad, so it only vibrated on acceleration, mostly a dead stop or low speed.

If the heater core(s) were already done, it may still smell coolanty, but I would dig around and check on those if you got it as well. Is the smell constant, or only comes on with the heater? Either way, my vote is a bad heater core.

Thanks on the heater core thought, I have never had to change one out myself but after searching a bit seems to be a DIY job.

Yo Pio, the emissions report was from carfax. I don't believe we could see the actual inspection information, will double check to make sure. Also the car seemed to be running rich just from exhaust smell, no CEL or visible indicators on dash (also didn't have my scan tool dammit). I was also thinking the same thing on the stage 0, plugs, wires...the whole shahbang.

The noise is really wierd, I would def call it a buzz and its distinctly in-line with the center console...intermittent but very audible when it came on. Right in the center dash behind the middle vents. We might have been driving and parked, both times we heard that noise.

I was hoping someone would suggest the heater core might have been done before and its just a residual smell. After poking through stuff earlier I found a Volvospeed tutorial!! So I will make sure to check under the carpets and such to see whats going on. Oh btw, we didn't even turn the heat on and we could smell vaguely but there was definitely a consistent odor I picked up on right away.

The buzzing sound behind the dash, and i'm just throwing it out there, might be part of the ECC system, namely the damper motors or if its like the little fans for climate control, it might have a bad ball bearing? dunno just a thought =0

pick it up and have fun! dododododoo it =)
