c_long20
I have a 98 V70 AWD, I saw some people are removing the AWD setup. What are the advantages, if any? I tried remove ing just the rear axle and all I do is spin.
yangotang
People remove it because their angle gears are failing to minimize risk to other components of the AWD system.
DHV70
Don't remove the rear axle, take out the drive shaft. You've got to raise the front end, remove 3 of the 6 bolts on each end of it, the 2 bolts on the exhaust bracket, then raise the back end, spin the shaft 180 degrees, lower it and repeat. then just pull the shaft out from the back. done! sea-xc
I pulled my driveshaft last year because I was getting a shudder on slow turns. I'm now ready to find the true cause, (cv joints and ctr bearing of driveshaft look good). If you're not having issues leave it in. Torque steer, traction control and the one wheel peel suck. I've seen no mileage benefit for those who say there is one.

The extra weight of the car is really the fuel economy issue. I've been driving mine on & off for the past month w/o the AWD - and if you think the torque steer/ wheel spin is bad stock, try it w/ over 300WHP
FCP Euro
If you are having issues with the AWD, then pull the driver shaft. Otherwise, just leave it alone. Also, this should be moved to the repair section. Not really performance related.
