Mogatu'r
to the op, I'm anti Volvo AWD (or at least the 98-00). It's weaksauce, breaks easy and $$ to maintain. Just pull the shaft out ;)

lookforjoe
My experience has been that you can safely run 300WHP on the stock AWD. It's performance in inclement wet/snow conditions is far superior to FWD. I'd highly recommend keeping it, unless you live in a climate where it basically never rains, or you don't drive when it does. Faster-than-stock FWD's NEED a posi, I don't :D
L8 APEKS
Nobody asked what kind of power the OP is making...might that make a difference? I mean, if you're near stock, and the AWD is still working properly, then why not leave well enough alone? If you're making enough TQ to pull your house off of its foundation, and you drive like Schumacher, then yes - maybe a preemptive strike might be in order!

I think the question really isn't breaking components because of torque, but mainly because of the AWD issues that these cars have with improper inflated tires, mismatching tires, etc. Preventative measure of taking out the rear drive shaft I think is a good idea, when you think about selling the car, throw it on there and let the next owner keep it AWD if they want. Personally, I'd keep it working and not use it rather than keep using it until it breaks.
