Olive850
hey whats going on? so i have a 1998 volvo s70 n/a, auto. 130K. i was driving to school today and i was going about 70mph and i noticed that the yellow arrow was flashing, so of course my heart skipped a beat. i looked at the rpms it was about 2500 maybe a little higher. i experienced this before in my 850, but the flashing light would go away, and just a check engine woudl stay, but now the light just flashes. the car shifts perfectly and rpms are normal, so is this just a pnp switch or should i worry? thanks

JordanW
Worry and be scared to drive it.... No, I don't think you'll drop the trans on the road. But, get it checked out. Could be as simple as a PNP, could be fluid temp was too high, could be many things. Don't drive around with the flashing arrow though, obviously something is up. Did you check the trans fluid with the engine running and warm? What color was the trans fluid? Has it been changed recently? I'd still get the codes pulled if you can... You could try seeing if there are any OBDII codes, though it may be just a TCM DTC.
shreksbrother
+1 on PNP switch. My car has been doing the exact same thing since I bought it a month and about 2k miles ago. Haven't gotten around to changing the switch yet. I would try the maneuver of moving your shift lever quickly from P-1 quickly 15-20 times. Stops mine from flashing for a day or two, and helps reaffirm that's all that's wrong.

shreksbrother
so your light flashes while ur driviing Absolutely. Same symptoms you describe. Perfect transmission operation, yellow upshift light and alternating "E" and "W" lights flashing while driving. Try the gear selector thing. If it stops for a bit (heck, even if it doesn't), it's your PNP switch.

v4lve
If you don't have reverse lights it is a pretty good indicator of a neutral safety switch(pnp). As mentioned before, run/slide through the gears (while stationary obviously) back and forth 15-20 times. Might get lucky and have that clean the contacts and buy you a little more time. So today I attempted to put in a spare pnp switch and the plugs did not fit, so I put everything back and so far today no flashing light at all. Its weird though my reverse light did not seem to be affected when the light was flashing

pcguru000
When my up arrow light was flashing i prayed it was a pnp but a couple days later i was leaving shop after paying 1300 bucks and getting a new trans.. Apparently the previous owner had some sort of obsession with neutral dropping it at the redline... never the less i would expect yours hasn't been through such hell- a pnp switch seems likely Also- did you check not only trans fluid level but color? smell? - bad tranny fluid is brown and will likely smell burnt and nasty - good should be pink and have not smell like much at all. A flush is always good too- when you (or whomever does it) goes to pull the plug off the bottom of the tranny to do the drain- check the inside of the plug and see if there is any build up of metal... we got like and inch worth of metal shards before we got any fluid out of my tranny LOL
