850 Na Mclovin

I've had this 95 850 NA for a little over a year now. I bought her from the wife of the owner of a local pizza chain for $1k for whom I delivered pies a couple nights a week, as my '00 XC could not take the abuse of delivery driving(no longer there, I now deliver sushi 2 nights a week). This car is a blast. For a small displacement engine, and considering there's no turbo...it hauls arse. I've done very little work to it, only plugs and air filter. I've come into some money with going back to school (pell grants r0x0r) so here's my deal:

1) It runs through about a quart of 20/50 oil every 1.5k miles, but blows no smoke, how can I troubleshoot this?

2) The spring mechanism on the driver's side door is busted, and "falls" open whenever I open the door. It used to pop very loud when I'd open, but eventually something broke(thankfully) and now it just swings open with careless aplomb. This only sucks because it's a full-time job preventing it from door-dinging whoever I'm parked next to. What's involved in fixing this?

3) I did not replace the wires when i did the plug job. Is it really necessary if firing seems to be fine?

4) I've read on here that the throttle body is a stage 0 item. Where is it, and what is involved in cleaning it.

5) Because the odo is broke, I cannot accurately gauge fuel economy, but it feels like it sucks. It runs great, but here's a hole in the exhaust, so it sounds like a Hemi. Would this be affecting mpg?

1) It runs through about a quart of 20/50 oil every 1.5k miles, but blows no smoke, how can I troubleshoot this? Not much info to go on but if you are not burning it it has to be going somewhere...look for leaks onder car, and check coolant for oil.

Replace part with genuine Volvo...~$50 and 1/2 hour. Don't get the knock-off part or you will be doing it again in six months negating any savings.

3) I did not replace the wires when i did the plug job. Is it really necessary if firing seems to be fine? Change them ~every 100k

4) I've read on here that the throttle body is a stage 0 item. Where is it, and what is involved in cleaning it. Look for a rubber hose ~3" in diameter going into the intake manifold (the big silver/aluminim thing) towards the front of the motor. It is under the throttle linkage. Unscrew the clamp and pull the rubber pipe off and there is the throttle plate.

5) Because the odo is broke, I cannot accurately gauge fuel economy, but it feels like it sucks. It runs great, but here's a hole in the exhaust, so it sounds like a Hemi. Would this be affecting mpg? not unless it is near the O2 sensors

1) are all plug wires created equal, or will spending the extra dough count for something in this application?

2) seafoam treatment: i did this a long long time ago, but can't recall the details....will any vacuum hose do the job?

1). Go with OEM Bougicord wires. Do NOT get Bosch.

2). Use any vacuum hose going to the intake manifold.

And get rid of the platinum plugs. If you are looking to save money, just buy copper plugs from any auto store. Champion copper, NGK coppers, autolite copper, etc etc. They are very cheap. Or go with OEM turbo plugs.

I've seen this copper bias since day one on these here forums. i put in NGK coppers on the XC, Bosch Platinum's on the 850...a spark plug is a spark plug. they all drive the same in my experience...

I forgot this thread was about the 850 NA. Platinums are fine in N/A cars.

that's what i thought too...

I run the plat +4's in my 93...love em...super long life, awesome MPG(not that im getting into MPG with it, but i like to believe they do their job =p ) and i dont ever have to worry with them pretty much! Turbos are different of course, as Adam stated, but hey were N/As =p

Check your O2 sensor..my NA runs rich as heck too, but highway i still pull 30mpg...granted i have a few things done to it, i would go ahead and check them out.

And depending on your climate, their a few 'free' thing you could do to make it a bit more fun to drive :)

Stage 0 is by far the best thing to do though...all the posts below are dead on!
