I'll leave it up to you all to call BS, and I don't know any better so here's the story. After I did a full ignition part service, cuz I had mad misfires, my car was running great. So junior wants to borrow my 855, his 740 needs the same treatment. 2 weeks ago. So at dinner last night we are talking about car stuff, and the 20yr old starts cracking up, obviously he knows something I don't. 18yr old goes into hysterical denial of wrong doing, tears streaming down his face, trying not to laugh. I finally assure them no retribution for actions, and he tells me he beat another car in a 1/4 mile drag. The funny part? The kid was so pissed he got beat he wants to sell his car! Rumor has it he dumped $4000 into the engine on a bunch of aluminum heads and pipes and what not, a 1987 Trans-Am with a 350 in it. So the race goes like this: They line up, at a place off the main roads that the kids know about, and off they go. The T/A spins it's tires at launch, my kid eases into the throttle, and at the 1/8th pole walks on the guy, by 6 lengths. Pissed off, T/A guy wants another run, junior says OK. Line it back up, they launch, T/A guy keeps his traction, at the 1/8th pole junior says he is looking at the T/A's license plate. BY the finish he has 3 lengths on the Pontiac. Dude is so pissed, he keeps going straight to the other exit from the race area, not turning around to pick up his passenger he brought or nothing, just bolts for home. My kid has no idea what the AFR, speedo, tach, or boost gauges were reading, he says he was just watching the road, fighting torque steer, and keeping an eye on the T/A. Can this be ? S8ET6 Posted November 12, 2009 Report Share Posted November 12, 2009 It sure can be possible. IIRC, the 87 TA came either with a 350ci automatic or a 305ci manual. The auto ran mid to high 14s stock. The 350 in that car had asthma. Heads, larger intake runners and exhaust would've got it into the 13s Add to that a stall, shift kit and stronger rear end and he would have got it to mid to low 13s From what you described, even with $4k in upgrades, I doubt that the car is faster than 13.8 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Zappo Posted November 12, 2009 Report Share Posted November 12, 2009 Yeah, it is possible because we really don't know the condition of the other car or if the driver knew what he was doing. Assuming the engine came in that car, the only 350 for 1987 in a Trans Am had 225 HP and 330 torque. Not sure I believe the torque number, but that is what is listed. The ST chip in your car would get you close enough on the torque and a lot more HP. I'll never let junior know how cool I think it is! He did say the T/A had brand new posi rear, auto tranny turbo 700 r4 (?), open exhaust with headers, new cams, I imagine head work also. torque number sounds about right from what the owner said, claiming 300+ HP. I have no idea what this all means or if it's accurate, but my son has seen the car and claims it's a beast. The engine bay looks all new. Sell that Firebird, you got whipped by a 15 yr old station wagon! Oh yeah, I had the boot loaded with tools, and the back seat had a weeks worth of clothes and camping gear in it, prolly 100 lbs of shite. My car does run real nice now. I solved my misfire issues, and my plug blow out. I gapped NGK coppers at .025 and no probs. Stock ignition wires, you can read the rest in my sig. I'm still coming to terms with mine being 7, let alone dragging my car and sex is at least a few years off... But sounds totally possible. He's not driving with any of the normal fears you might be dealing with at wot. Have you set him up with real driving classes? The short answer is no. But I explained the concept of torque steer, what afr's mean and how boost does not necessarily translate into a good thing, like at low RPM's. Also he did not spin the tires on launch, so he has a grasp of the throttle response. I, on the other hand, was pulling around a car the other day on a 2 lane road, mashed it and spun the tires mercilessly in 2nd gear. The car is running real well right now, I gotta admit. Probably a good time to dyno the sucker. Ahhh, 7yrs old, good times. Your still the hero in their lives. They still clean up after themselves, and are relatively polite. Also loved teaching them how to play baseball, catch snakes and put a worm on a hook! And they stayed outta my beer.
