steveinseattle
Hi, We have 150K miles on our '01 S80. We have owned the vehicle since '04, when after driving it for a couple of months it needed a new transmission. This is the GM transmission, which is terrible. As soon as we got the new one, it failed, and then car got its' third one. We have put 75K miles on the transmission, and every time I ask Volvo if I need to service it, they say no. Being an ex Mercedes owner, I know that changing oil and filters keeps an automatic gearbox happy. I see that quite a number of websites sell a filter and gasket kit for my vehicle, but both IPD and Volvo say there is NO TRANSMISSION OIL filter inside the oil pan of the transmission. So who is right? Does this thing have a filter that I need to replace. I don't trust Volvo, they will tell me no, so I can buy another rebuilt GM transmission for THOUSANDS. Any ideas? Crito
Yes, it has a filter but you don't really need to change it. Just get the IPD flush kit and follow the instructions that comes with it. You don't even have to jack the car up to do it yourself. Only trick with S80 is to remember it's the lower hose you have to remove, not the upper like with other Volvos.
steveinseattle
Thanks guys... So if I understand correctly. 1) There IS a filter (Volvo and IPD lied). 2) I don't have to change it, just replace the fluid every..... Crito
If you're going to lift the car up in the air and drop the pan you might as well replace the filter. Doing the IPD "ghetto flush" is sufficient though and you can do it yourself with some gallon sized milk jugs. Opinions vary on how often, from never (Volvo dealer) to every other oil change (like some street racers on the boards do). Personally I'm not planning on doing it again for quite some time (30K miles at least). Might put a couple fresh quarts in every now and then just because you can't really get all the old stuff out the first few times but that's about all really. Some say it's best not to "shock" an old tranny with a complete flush anyways.
