At Wits End W/ Clogged Pcv System

Car is a 95 850 w/ 155k non-turbo

Several months ago I took apart the PCV system and checked all the holes in the block. All seemed unclogged. I had a few months prior to that paid a Volvo shop to replace the system, which was done, as all the components are new, and there is zero residue up in the system.

I replaced the o-rings on the bottom of the dip stick as well as the top. I also replaced the filler cap o-ring.

I am still getting a ton of white condensation, oil on top of the block (where the plugs are) and recently on a 1,300 mile drive my car leaked like a sieve and I blew thru a quart in 600 miles.

Where do I go from here??? Help!!! I'm doing a 2,200 mile trip in 3 weeks and want this thing sorted out. But I have no idea where to go from here short of replacing the engine!!!

I could live with it, but to be honest it's just pissing me off now!!!

Seems like youve done everything i would, but just to be safe to check:

Have you cleaned the PTC?

And the oil cap gasket...replaced that recently?

If those are done...then i hope the pros got info!

Assuming the clamp/hose is on correctly on top of the cam cover, it's possible the oil cap itself is bad. They can warp a little over time, and will leak even with a new gasket. I would try a cleaning the mess and installing a new oil cap.

Is there any smoke from the dipstick tube with the engine warmed up? The oil leak may not be PCV related. Can you get under the car and see where it is leaking from?

You mentioned white condensation... are you seeing this on the dipstick?

Yep all done, although I don't think the N/A has a PTC correct?

There's white smoke from the dipstick tube and down it after running for awhile, and white goo on the tip of the dipstick itself as well. I cleaned the whole dipstick tube thinking condensation was already on it but alas that did not help.

I'm familiar with the white goo if you drive a bit but I had some on my dipstick after maybe 200 miles of highway driving at 65+. And when I pulled the dipstick out white condensation is coming out. There is definitely something plugged up, I just have no idea where.

The only thing I didn't take apart was the EGR valve, could that be plugged up and cause a problem?

I could replace the cap but placing it on a flat surface it doesn't appear warped. I suppose I could do it but have serious doubts it would actually fix the issue.

Is there any other place the system could be clogged? Or just the one hole in the bottom of the block?

the most restrictive part on the pcv system on the NA is the flame trap.

Pull the white disc out of the flame trap. It's that white disc with a zillion small holes in it. It gets clogged up in no time and you'd be surprised how much it restricts the flow of the crankcase gases. No harm done by removing it.

As for the oil leaking, I don't know what to tell you on that one.

I replaced pcv and tried 2 oil cap orings and it would still leak. So I pulled an oil cap off a junker and problem solved. I could not see any problems with my original oil cap BTW.

Did it still smoke though? And get white goo on the dip stick?

I never had any smoke, before or after pcv. The only time I had white goo on my dipstick was from condensation and that went away after I ran the engine at operating temp for a while and has not returned. If the goo keeps coming back you definitely have something not good going on.

Like I said in the previous post replacing the oil cap/oring solved oil coming out of the top of the crankcase.

To confirm that it is a crankcase pressure problems I've read that you can pressure test the crankcase. I found that on the internet somewhere. Volvo actually has specs on what the pressure should be.

I found the link that discusses pressure testing...

Thank you so much for that link. I really appreciate it. I'm still undecided as to what to do. I might end up taking the whole thing apart and doing the PCV and oil pan o-rings in one shot since it appears I have to take the oil pan off anyway to properly clean the PCV holes according to that article.

The hole pictured in #12 can be checked without removing the oil pan. Get a piece of hose the same diameter of the hole and blow through the orifice. If you can hear the oil bubbling, the passage is clear. If you cannot blow through it, time to remove the oil pan.

FYI the perfect size hose is Volvo P/N 949701
