The hole pictured in #12 can be checked without removing the oil pan. Get a piece of hose the same diameter of the hole and blow through the orifice. If you can hear the oil bubbling, the passage is clear. If you cannot blow through it, time to remove the oil pan.

FYI the perfect size hose is Volvo P/N 949701

Excellent! Thank you! This will be a job after the new year, I'm just going to drive on my long road trip. I hate taking that manifold off and on as I don't like torquing down those bolts into the aluminum head.

Also check the notorious elbow at the right of the intake manifold. (I have a turbo, but I think NAs have this also.) I had replaced both the elbow (with OE) and the PCV hose there (with the FCP kit), and the fit isn't really as tight as it should be. Came disconnected. Ideally I'd put a clamp or zip-tie on there, but it was all I could do to reconnect the joint.

When I did my sump seal work last weekend, I noticed a rectangular port from the crankcase up into the block. I presume this is the one that drains oil back from the oil separator via the hole in picture 12? That hole was not completely blocked, but did have heavy black deposits in it. I dug them out with a screwdriver, and also cleaned the matching port in the block. You can see that rectangular port in the upper left corner of this pic.

Wow that's great, really easy to see what I need to clean out. Quick question, any ideas on the other hole? Does it typically block or not really? It appears to go more into the center of the block rather than the oil reservoir. How should I clean it or confirm it's clear? Thoughts?
