Tried a few relays and same problem..Could the ECT be bad causing the relay to be switched on? Yes it could. My original ECt lasted 90k/5yrs, replacement which I bought from Volvo lasted 60k/7yrs so they do go with age and mileage.
atefitty
Thanks for the input..So it would be the ECT at the thermostat correct? I believe the other temp sensor just runs the guage..
erikv11
I only know of one sensor, the ECT sensor at the thermostat. It runs the dash gauge, and when the sensor is bad it is known to cause the cooling fan to turn on.

SladetheSleeper
Funny thing about this problem happened to me a few years ago. For a temp fix (it was january so I wasn't worried about it getting hot) I pulled the plug for the fan because it was draining my battery. A couple of weeks later, we had a massive snow storm combined with rush hour and my wife was driving the volvo. Took her 3 hours to go 4 miles. After about 2 hours, she called me to tell me the engine was smoking and overheating. I had her plug the fan back in and had her wait a little bit. I was worried I had a warped head but no problems. The weird part was that after that overheating incident, the fan never had the running problem again and now works normally. Glad you fixed yours the right way.
