S80 Purchase Opinions Needed

Im looking at a 99' S80T, it has 114k miles, body is in good shape, couple scuffs nothing bad, interior in good shape, its totally loaded out, it has i guess what is the info center that pops up in the middle of the dash and all that. Engine sounded good. Its gonna need tires soon.

The bad is, ofcourse, the trans is out, It will not shift into higher gears and from what ive read the trans is a common problem. Ive done some checking and its gonna be about 2k to get the tranny rebuilt. The info center showed something about the emissions and the CEL was on and ofcourse the warning about the tranny.

the good... i can get the car for under 1500 bucks.. sooo.... ill have about 3500.00 total in it. Ive looked at the book on these and the low end in poor condition is like 4k i think. I know the cars are problematic, but, i guess im just trying to get some bias opinions on if its a good buy and worth putting the money into it. the car is for my wife and she only drives about 6k a year, mainly all local driving.

some opinons on this would help me make a decision... thanks..

I'd avoid the 1999-2001 S80 because of all the ETM issues. Volvo switched to a Bosch electronic throttle module in 2002 model year.

I own a 01 S80 with 125K miles. This car has been nothing but problems--every time I ask for help, opening sentence is "yea common problem, here's how to fix". The people on this forum are wounderful in helping out--lot's of good knowledge and people willing to help. My car was great until about 60K miles. Laundry list of issues

1. strut mount bushings (if you hear noises over bumps, spend $400 on that)

2. Oxygen sensors--cost me $1000

3. ABS module issues--Volvo wanted $1500, i had it fixed for $150

4. Plastic lock for the gas cap door broke--easy $15 fix

5. Headliner jamed in the sunroof--now its locked closed for life

6. lot's of little plastic trim parts breaking (just can't take the sun)

7. Car now leaks oil (I'm sure this is another common issue...)

8. ETM fixed twice, broken again (up to $400 on that one)

9. some other things...

I would strongly stay away from this car. While cheap, expect to spend lot's more keeping it running. I know the group will chastize me for this, but look at some other posts.

Sorry to be negative, but this car isn't nearly what I expected

common issues on most Volvo's.. lol

1. Strut mounts same from 1993-present?

3. Module has issues on the X70's/850s as well (not so common on the S60 yet)

4. Gas door hinge -1993-present

6. Plastic is brittle on these cars

7. Normally leaking from the drain plug (needs new washer) or leaking from the turbo drain pipe

8. Get a rebuilt Unit - http://xemodex.com/xemodex_013.htm (much reliable)

But yea I have heard of 99 s80's being a problem, but if it has a clean history and you know the service on the car, it might not be that bad
