In The Ditch Tonight!

So, I leave downtown Richmond around midnight tonight, and I say to myself "It's a perfect night, no one is hardly out, the world is my oyster, I think I'll go have some fun and take the long way home."

I hit I-295 from Rt. 5 and get off an the Hopwell exit on Rt. 10. Made a rightt on Enon Church Rd., which turns into "Snake Rd." Extremely winding course, fun to drive.

Okay, so I'm digging into the turns, braking upon approach and excellerating through the corners. So there is this one left hand corner where I start to drift, and I really felt the car handle it well, then right at the end, it drifts too much, so I let off to corrected it, only too over correct it and head to the deep ditch on the right shoulder. The right front wheel dipped off the road into the mud. This really messes up the the traction and control and I very well could have landed the whole car side-ways into the ditch, but I kept the car steady and pulled it out.

I stopped off to the side a little ways to check for damage. Most of the right side of the car was caked with mud but the front fender was untouched. There was no signs of anything hitting the car, dents, or scratches. So I got back in and headed home, driving a bit more conservatively. Because of the mud that was caked in the rims, the car vibrated a bit when I took it back up to higher speeds.

The lesson that I learned is first: it isn't a good idea to take corners with stock suspension until I get the upgrades (soon to come) otherwise, I could have taken it. Second, save the racing for the course. Though I'm confindent in my driving skills, it is better to put them to the test in a controled environment.

What can I say, I have fun with my ride, and I'm a crazy guy! PEACE!

at least you learned something. drifting on public roads

I believe he said it was a course...

Extremely winding course, fun to drive.

And yes, he's lucky he didn't hit anyone else on the 'course.'

And one more thing... drifting a FWD car?

If you are confident in your driving skills then you should stay with the stock suspension and go to any autox and see if you still think you know how to drive. I am not trying to be funny, most people here think they can drive, but you go to an autox and see if you can drive like some of the regulars there that are using the STOCK suspension. The best way to learn how to drive a car is WITH the STOCK suspension. You will find that after several autox with the stock suspension that your driving skills will improve dramtically, you will learn the limits of your car, etc. You will also find that you may not need to upgrade your suspension as the stock one is fine or can handle about 90% of what you throw at it.

okay, that's nice. My suspension is okay, I guess...except the knocking I hear sometimes from the right strut. I don't think I need to go to an Autox to tell me how well I drive, though I'd like to go one day. As a matter of fact, this is the first time that I'm upgrading the suspension on any car that I've owned and I'm ready to try something different. And I think I want my car to handle not 90%, but up to 100% of what I through at it.

PEACE!

No, it wasn't a course, just a fun country road. I drive that 'course" only at night so I can see the headlights of other cars coming around the corners. Normally, there are very few drivers anywhere in that area at 1 a.m. Now the drifting, what I expirienced was like a 'drift', call it what you may, I can't think of another word to describe what I expirienced.

PEACE!

Wow. Sounds like you have some serious driving skills, to pull off a save like that and all.

I wish I could figure out how to drift my Volvo. I guess my engine just doesn't make enough torque or something. I can't seem to get the rear end to come around so I can really drift it out. It sounds like you did a great job figuring it out, though. Next time the rear end of FWD family sedan begins to walk out a little sideways while "drifting," I'll let off the gas to transfer more of the weight up front and away from the rear wheels.

PEACE!

Lift-off oversterr is a wonderful thing ... untill it gets too out of hand.

My car will understeer in a bend if i'm giving it gas, but the instant i take it away, the steering goes light and latteral travel of the rear begins. Good fun on a track, bad form on a public road. Has a habit of snapping out at you for no reason.

Yep, you hit the nail right on the head, I definately expirienced that in my car last night.

Glad to hear ya got out of it without any damage...That road is a lot of fun, and like you said - nights are the best time to take it. :-P Just watch out for all of the idiots (and the side of the road...the people who made the roads/ditches around here were on crack because it goes straight from the road to the ditch.) I haven't been on it since a few months ago when an idiot friend of mine wrecked his El Camino on Snake doing 45ish in the rain...

Btw - have any other suggestions on fun roads around here? I take Branders Bridge almost daily and starting at Stoney Glen South and ending a little before Colonial Heights is a fun drive. There's no real sharp corners...I just like being able to get my car airborn in a few spots. =D Also Spring Run off of Beach (heads in to Midlothian sorta) has some sharp corners.

Yes, BTW, there is a road that goes from south of Chester all the way to Amelia. Then hit Hull street on the way back. +100 mile round trip and pure driving excitment....I forgot the name of the road though, I think it's River Rd., but not the same one that's up on the West end....look on the map, it's the only road that does it.

Hey, you coming to the Richmond meet on the 27th? I think it's going to be off of River Rd., uh, the one on the West end of Richmond of course. Read the post in the 'member's only annoucments'. Be there, and be square, like your car! (bad joke).

PEACE!
