2000 V70 R Turbo

Hi, new to this forum, My Son "Turbocooled" pointed me here,Me a Lifelong Volvo enthusiast This is # 10 I think. I just bought a 2000 V70 R Wangon with 135,000 miles from a GM dealer in Iowa. It is a very clean car, except it was blowing a lot of smoke when you got on it. I determined it was the turbo bearings going out since there was oil in intercooler tube.

I removed the turbo and there is no oil on the intake side. However ther is oil in the intercooler tube a about paper thick and the down pipe has a oily soot. The Turbo has very little axial or end play maybe 2 thousand and that would be pushing it. Well I have it out should I buy a Kit form some one like G-Pop or send it in to someone? Who and Where.

Also Nick From Site Brand X, asked if I checked the PVC. I will, However this car seams to have been well taking care of.

Re-post ops

if you have no experience rebuilding turbos then send it out, you will probally want to send it out to be balanced anyways, there are many places to have it done, i would search for a reputable shop locally, you could ask around at some local performance shops, they normally have some hook ups.

definetly check your pcv tho.

If the turbo doesnt have much shaft play at all then chances are its fine.

if its smoking it could be, turbo, pcv, valve guides, rings etc...

I would stage 0 the car before going any further.

I live in Iowa for the last 15 years, and have not had much luck finding a Volvo community. Willis Auto in Des Monies have been good to me. A bit expensive. (~$1800 to R & R Turbo) I have rebuilt one turbo with my son before, however I would like to have it balanced. So $400 there. Yes, I am going through everything plugs, wires, and such. "Stage 0"

If any one know of a good Volvo mechanic in central Iowa...Let me know.

And I guess, I will send out the Turbo for a rebuild. I already have it out. I can not find any one in Iowa.

So, I am asking where is a good place to send the turbo.

Thank you Mdlimy5

No oil in the water, no water in the oil.

All piston have carbon on them. So I do not think it is a head gasket.

The car does not start to smoke until it warm up.

It does not smell like oil.

It does dissipate fast.

And the harder you get on it, the more the smoke.

Usually on the 99+ cars the PTC valve should be cleaned but replacing the breather box and PCV hoses is a good idea anyway while you're at it.

That is often the problem when it looks like the turbo is letting oil through.

gpopshop is pretty good though my rebuild experience with them was only so-so...a lot of paint, not so much rust removal but the turbo works well and they were efficient and friendly through the process. Cherry Turbos in Canada has a great reputation if/when you decide to go the rebuild route. You can also order rebuild kits on E-bay for 70 dollars or so and Lookforjoe made a nice write-up on the rebuild process. Personally, I would still send it out for balancing but that isn't so expensive from what most have said on here.

Oh and also check your turbo return line to see if you have some oil leaking out of that. The return line seal often goes after a certain number of years and miles.

The oil trap was all but empty. Just a light film of a milky white slime. This stuff, I cleaned out anyway.

I am starting to thing it could be the turbo leaking water on the exhaust side if that is possible.

I did not completely take off the PTC so I have a job for tomorrow night. I did take off the hose and squirt some cleaner in it when I had the Turbo off.

Thanks for all the reply's.
