Rex
Hi All, Thought I'd share my Christmas present to myself. I've been un-happy with the brakes on my AWD R since I got the car - after talking to Volvo tuning specialist Russell at RT Mechanics in the UK (owner of the 591bhp Yellow Peril) I opted to take his advise and list the Porsche calipers on eBay and instead buy the properly adapted AP racing kit (I've been down this road with a rally car I'm building and had no end of head-aches adapting Brembo's sourced from another vehicle) Having fitted the IPD anti-roll bars I was instantly impressed at how they immediately and radicaly changed the handling characteristics of the Volvo. Even the steering seems tighter.... And then I fitted the brakes Once shimmed up correctly and loctited in, the brakes bled up fine with the engine running, and there was no pressure loss which I was dreading from past experience. The original Volvo R 17's had to go as for some reason they would no longer fit without spacers, but luckily I had a set of aftermarket 19's salvaged from a C70 - the chrome rims looked a bit bling to me so I added some alloy filler to take out the scuffs and painted them grey/black with silver dust and a satin varnish - which came out a bit shinier than I was hoping for. But there you go..... As Russell said - these are the best mods he ever made to his Yellow monster - having not gone that far as yet, I can certainly say this mod was worth every penny, despite the price of the brakes. No more brake fade, no more boiling fluid - just a lairy estate car that now stops and handles properly! Regards to all and Merry Christmas

Chilled man
Why's that? Mounting plates for non-standard calipers..... How does it mount to hub ? It looks like the where the caliper mounts for the stock ones are removed ? Or I am just seeing things orrrr duh the braket is on the inside
Rex
Perhaps it's the old OEM caliper still hanging down in the backdrop of the pic that has you confused?
tonyt-5
Out of interest why did Russ recommend you not using the Porsche calipers?
Rex
"Out of interest why did Russ recommend you not using the Porsche calipers?" Ridiculously sized wheel-spacers for one. The Ackerman effect and all that.... There's so much I'm dumb out there on the internet that despite being a garage owner and despite doing some basic road car tuning here - I'd rather take the advice from people who have been there and done that, rather than do it on the cheap despite having the bits on the shelf. I had a whole Boxster to repair another crash-damaged we were fixing for a customer, so believe you me the decision was difficult when you consider how much extra the AP's cost!!Heh, the automated swear feature on the forum swapped "bullsh!t" for "I'm dumb". To cool. "Out of interest why did Russ recommend you not using the Porsche calipers?" Ridiculously sized wheel-spacers for one. The Ackerman effect and all that.... Irf managed some good results last year on the Nurburg ring last year when using the Dixel pads. I have also gone with the Porsche calipers S60 R discs and carbotech XP10 pads, but you need to run genuine pegs if you don't want to use spacers.Another option you could of had was to use the Team dynamic 1.2 alloys which I have now opted for and there is no need for spacers with these either

JCviggen
I though APs were floating rotors? They are? (see pics) Should have gone for slotted rather than drilled though.

JCviggen
Yea that was my first impression too but then I saw the 12 little bolts I like my AP racings, but I wish there was a higher quality replacement rotor available. The stuff AP sells is simply too soft to abuse on track. (I already checked and was unable to find anyone who makes discs for this particular hub)

Che'_Moderator
Yea that was my first impression too but then I saw the 12 little bolts I see bolts but no slots or bobbins. If they are floating how much radial float do they have? Used to seeing .5-1mm float like this: OP, what wheels/ties are you using? You have a decent amount of rub there.
