Few Questions...

Is it at all possible for the car to have a problem that usually causes for a code, but not have the check engine light come on?

For example: Very high chance I have bad o2 sensor or bad MAF sensor. BUT, I get no codes for anything except a knock sensor code I've had for years. So I wonder if it's still worth replacing those.

Figured out some bad rattling sound I sometimes have, my flywheel has come a little bit loose and you can actually see it travel a tiny bit when it's spinning and it's hitting the back of the block EVER so slightly. It's to my understanding I have to drop the tranny in order to reach that. (Ouch)

Took the car to the shop...again. Mechanic says that it's very unlikely to be causing my bog and bad gas mileage. In fact they didn't think the car was running rich because they didn't smell it when they were checking it up. I had good spark, they didn't bother with my fuel injectors. They never have had to on any 850 for that matter.

Now personally I THINK you can smell the car running rich, but not even my dad thinks he REALLY smells it. They told me to make sure I monitor the average gas mileage, then I tell the guy I'm getting 13mpg, really about 10mpg now. You would figure I'd be blowing some serious smoke if I'm running that rich?!?

Can't take away from the fact I get MAJOR bog, I wish this thing was easy to nail, but it's deffinitely not, especially when the codes I'm not getting don't lead me to point anywhere.

When you have a knock sensor code set the following happens.

1) Knock control is disabled

2) Only initial boost permitted

3) Ignition advance reduced for safety reasons

4) Increase in the quanity of fuel to cool down Fuel/air mixture.

Sounds like whats happening to you?

Yes, very much so actually. I just take the knock sensor code lightly because it's been there forever.

But would a increased amount of fuel for cooling cause my Miles Per Gallon to bottom out?

Ignition advance is reduced at times, I have had that.

And I do seem to experience boost that cuts back hard.

*Edit*I don't know if this is a good example but here is my car's acceleration characteristics:

Heavy bog upon initial accleration, 5-10 or so seconds into a acceleration period the car will surge to what seems like normal acceleration, tranny shifts gears smoothly, power cuts back, then repeats bog and so forth. Bog is MOST evident through 2,000-3,000rpm and on moderate to hard acceleration through the RPM's it feels like the car stutters and stumbles at certain points.

On a couple occasions I have let the car warm up, and then for some reason or another I have to turn it off, and when I return to start the car a couple minutes later I get no start. The car doesn't try to start at all, no crank, no nothing. Just silence. That is probably an example of ignition advance being reduced. It usually takes the car about 45 minutes until it will start up again.
