randomdude
that seems like a silly question. obviously people want to talk about UDP's. and your not helping kill it lol.
the commissar!
Why is this thread still alive? Because I want to learn what belt and routing others are using successfully with this modification. Isn't that the purpose of the forum??? To share ideas and information... HeavyIron
I'm have another question on the belt... The writeup in the performance section states the following: "There is a serpentine belt change required when installing the pulley, Gates K060630 which can be purchased at NAPA. This Gates belt requires the old serpentine belt routing." I looked up that belt number on the Gates site and they say that belt is 63 5/8" long. The OP sataes that 68" is perfect. 691/8" is stock So, using the 68" belt did you use the new routing? What did others use that have this installed? Opinions on the best belt setup? I must have the new routing, b/c I tried the reccomended Gates K060630 and it was woefully short. Ended up cutting the factory belt and pulling it tight and measuring. TurboedVolvo
Looks good! So, it really does make a tangible difference, eh? How much are they? What brand belt did you use? This.
airedale3882
This. I remember this mod from air cooled VW days. Was cheap and effective for that engine therefore, I would think for this Volvo engine too (or almost any modern engine as well). So the big question for me is: Where do I get one for my 1998 Volvo XC? I have checked Alamo and they don't seem to list this part for my car. The replacement belt could be easily sourced locally. But where to get this pulley that weighs around 11 oz.? Hundred bucks seems expensive to me, as does every thing else, just another indication of old age, I guess. But who sells this part? Thanks

Thanks I just got off the phone. I talked to Noah(?) at Alamo racing. She asked for my phone number and said she would call if she found a underdrive pulley for my Volvo. I do not expect for Alamo racing to be a source for this elusive part. But who knows? I remember this mod from air cooled VW days. BurgerBob
Bought mine from Alamo like two years ago via Ebay. After that, all I had to do was follow the directions in the VS mod section.
the commissar!
According to what I read it was only a 20% reduction so the factory belt fitted just fine on my UDP. I don't know how that could be based on my experience last night...I installed the pulley and the standard belt was so long the tensioner went as far as it could go and DID NOT PUT TENSION ON THE BELT. I must have the new routing, b/c I tried the reccomended Gates K060630 and it was woefully short. Ended up cutting the factory belt and pulling it tight and measuring. I went to O'reily's and picked up the Gates belt that is 68" long and, as suggested by HeavyIron, was the perfect fit. I used the new belt routing with this. Hope this helps others who stumble on one of these UD pullies! I likes mine so far... Michael
