According to my local Volvo dealer, my radio unit is shot and needs a replacement. This will cost me $648 installed. According to the dealer, I cannot buy a used unit as it's already been programed for another car therefore I need a new unit. Is this true? They aldo do not advise buying an after market unit as some things in the car won't work properly. Any advise?

No, the dealer is trying to rip you off.

You can certainly buy a used unit - just make sure the code comes with it since with the code it is just plug and play. Here's one on eBay for $109 for instance. You also can go with an aftermarket head units though you won't necessarily have the same nice match with the interior - see Crutchfield for instance for examples. Of course, this depends on whether you have the navigation and CD changer installed - do you? There may be some compatibility issues there IIRC.

But what year is your V70 and what is your radio doing that caused the dealer to say it's shot?

You can buy a 613 off eBay for 50-60 bucks and it will go into your car w/o any software because your car already has 613 software

HOWEVER, you need to buy the same year as your car, if you buy the wrong year, your steering wheel controls and backlight will not work

Hello, I just bought a 2001 V70 T5 and only have had it for a month and a half. The unit was playing fine until just about a week ago. The unit is flashing with random channel numbers and words appear. The cd/cassette is unable to play but the radio goes plays periodically. Sometimes I hear the radio only with the rear speakers and at times I don't hear any sound. I keep thinking it may be a loose connection. I'm in San Francisco and the streets are rough whereas the car was originally domiclied in Palo Alto California where the roadway is kept in better condition. The dealer wants $450 for a new unit, $22 for the software, $104 for installation and $39 in sales tax. Thanks for responding as I was considering a used unit off of ebay. Some were below $100.
