Can You Pull The Engine/Trans Out The Top Of The Hood?

Originally I bought a junked 95 or 96 850 w/ seized engine with the intention of taking some parts off and then having a junkyard take it, however really the only thing wrong with it that I can tell and that I know about (without having it at home yet) is a seized engine from lack of oil. I got the bright idea to swap an engine into it for fun. I'm into the car for $250 and the junkyard will take $150 for it sight unseen and I'll easily get $100 in parts off of it so it's no big deal if I can't swap it.

After seeing some pictures of people who dropped the engine and tranny out from underneath the car I just don't have the room to do that in my garage so just curious if anyone knows if it's possible to take the engine out the top of the car w/ the tranny attached (Ozark told me I couldn't separate the tranny from the engine because it was seized). So I guess it would have to be taken out as one unit.

Thoughts? I posted on MVS too but this site gets a bit more traffic.

Thanks

Chilled,

That's some serious removal techniques! You must have that down to a science by now. The two bottles of M-Dew are a nice touch - little caffeine & sugar to keep the ball rolling?

yeah pretty much lol

acutally most of the car I can put back together by just touch not even having to look where the part goes

Can do it leaving the trans in too.

I did that once, but it was VERY tight, and seemed to take forever to get the manual trans lined up with the engine properly. Maybe my technique was off, but I remember thinking I'd definitely pull the engine/trans as a pair next time.

I did it for the first time ever this past summer. I had no help other than my wife cheering me on during the actual removal. I remember this terrible feeling of doom when it was out...like I hope I can remember where all those bolts and plugs go...

It was a wonderful feeling when the replacement was in and fired up the first try. I knew I could do it! I did not time myself but did it over a period of months cleaning and modifying things as I went along...More of a project than a race for me...

I used breerz instead of Mt. Dew for inspiration though! B);):P

That is good to hear, the sense of accomplishment must've felt great! That is the way I'm looking at it too...a project to learn. I think it's a good skill to have these days, more and more people are moving away from hands on knowledge.

I just noticed you are in Prosperity SC, that is where my parents grew up. They went to Newberry College.
