850 Stalls While Driving

Recommended Posts

Have and 855R and done almost a complete stage 0 1yr ago.

Car starts fine hot or cold and no blue smoke or rough idle. Once car is warm headlights start to dim, heater cuts out and car just stalls like a complete electrical short. No CEL, nothing, and to make it worst it won't restart right after. After it stalls no interior lights, dash lights ect. car is just dead. I usually have to wait 3-4 minutes and once I turn key to ACC starts right up with no problems.

Car has a new fuel pump and fuel filter

New Bosch Battery

New IPD wires, bosch copper core plugs, new distributor

New MSD ignition

New timing belt

2 new bosch 02 sensors

I cannot figure out the source of the problem. I used volt meter car gets 12 volts when off and 13-14 while running so I think my alternator is OK. I read some posts similar to this problem stating it might be fuel pump relay, MAF sensor or alternator problems but I believe if it was once it dies I would get some dash/interior lights at lease I did when my 4runner alternator died.

Any help would be appreciated.

Fuel pump relay is original?

Yup i used to have this issue BIG time with the original relay...It'd stall out, no turning back or attempting to start. I still have a similar issue...stalls out before warmed up generally when taking turns...hasn't done it since the ECC went kapoop completely, if thats coincidence or not. Pushed it to land, wait 1-2 minutes with key out, restart.

I'm gonna put it out there though since i'm on this part atm....Your ECT...what is it's condition?

Only say that cause you say it happens once the car heats up...

Thank you to everyone who replied. I cleaned the battery terminals with baking soda, added distilled water to battery cells and then replaced the fuel pump relay. I have drove the car for 2 days now with everything on (lights, radio, heater ect.) and no repeat of the stalling issue. Hopefully the fuel pump relay fixed it.

Thank you all again!

Next time this happens and if you suspect fuel relay, then:

- Open the driver's side fuse box (Torx screwdriver)

- Locate the Fuel Relay and remove it and jump terminals 15 and 87 on the connector. If the car now runs, then the fuel relay is defective.
