Leakdown Test

Was in the maintenance section but my concerns deal with performance....

Since install of the 19t I have smelt burning oil and noticed burned oil on the bottom side of the VBand clamp, and only a small bit being sprayed along the back (firewall) of the engine. Initially suspected issues with the turbo, but have limited that outside the ridiculous possibility of a poor rebuild (doubtful). i.e.~ new drain gasket/orings, check/double check fittings, all new copper crush washers, no oil line leaks present.

Tryingbe recommended a leakdown test and have the results, need some help interpreting the numbers.

(front pass->drivers side)

1. 25% all heard thru dipstick

2. 27% all headr thru dipstick

3. 20%, all heard thru dipstick

4. 20% dipstick

5. 15% dipstick

Have also noticed a good amount of oil dripping into the spark plug 4 tunnel, but I doubt it's getting into the cylinder because the spark plug showed no unusual fouling. Pictures upload later.

if oil is being sprayed on the firewall, then you'd better find that puppy before you start a car fire!

I've seen oil catch fire on a stock exhaust manifold of a N/A car, so I can only imagine how quickly it would catch fire if it got on a hot turbo.

As for your test results, you're going to hear air escape from the dipstick. The question is: do you hear it from any other locations as well?

I'd focus my efforts on location the source of the firewall spray 1st if I were you.

Good luck

How many miles on the motor?

At least the pressures are even, if a little high. Did you also do a compression test?

Oil spray on the firewall, I'd be checking the oil cap seal, especially if you're running high boost levels. I lost 1/2 quart out the oil cap before I did my modified breather, running higher boost levels. Also the drain tube seal. If the drain tube was cocked at all, it'll blow oil under high boost, when the CC pressures are up....

I don't think I'm loosing enough for this to be worry right now, but it's definitely something I'm going to keep my eye out for because that's obviously not something I want to happen

Oil cap seal is new, I did look at it today and it appears that the oil leak is coming from around the oil cap. There's a vent right on the cap , I've considered tapping it and running it into my catch can? Drain tube gasket & oring both new. Twice <_< , I've double checked the orientation also.... <_<

Didn't do a compression test but was going to ask if it would be worthwhile, give me any data I really am not already reading?

Vent in the cap? No volvos have vented caps.... that's why they have positive crankcase ventilation.

Your leakdown between a couple of the cylinders are almost double. I'd want to know want the compression is, and if adding a little oil makes a difference.

Just doing a leakdown test is only going to tell you a portion of the story. When you couple it with a compression test and a smog test with a sniffer, then you get the full picture. (Yes, a smog test is a VERY valuable diagnostic tool..) At the very least, do a compression test to get a better idea of what's happening in there.

+1

That much leak down, I'd be expecting the rings. It would definitely be pressurizing the crank case causing oil to find any interesting escape route to relieve the pressure.

Caps can wear out to, just because you put a new seal on 100k cap dosen't mean it's going to seal.

But I agree you should at the min. also do a compression test.

The only way a cap can wear is if the rivets for the "tangs", (which are spring steel, so don't really ever bend) come loose from the base - I've never seen that happen, personally.

No smoking whatsoever.

Midtown Atlanta, right next to Georgia Tech. 10th street & juniper

I live in Tucker. We could have a mini-gathering at my house.. A DIY day.. I've got a truckload of suspension parts coming as well as a pro-assortment of air tools and other specialized bits and I'd be happy to lend a brain and my hands to anyone's projects.
