'04 S80, Awd, Many Questions

I have an 04, S80 AWD, 2.5 turbo with the 5spd auto trans. It has 106K on it and is in very nice condition, I would like to keep it that way. I've always done my own auto work but never owned a foreign vehicle before and this thing is a bit different than the typical Dodge.

I can not find the transmission dip stick....or, does it not have one? I would also like to do an ATF/ filter change and flush on the trans since I would guess it has never had one.

Are there any haynes or similar manuals on this car? I can't seem to find one at a parts store.

How do you adjust the hid headlights, can't seem to figure that one out either.

...and I've been trying to figure out how to install a compustar remote car starter in this thing but we can not seem to get it right. Anybody successfully installed a starter on an '04 S80? We sure would love to learn the trick.

Appreciate any help in advance.

Congrats on the new acquisition!

I'm not sure (manual driver) but it may not have one.

At this mileage, the usual advice is don't flush the fluid -- just do a few drain and fills or you risk stirring stuff up and sending the transmission to an early grave.

Because of the engine immobilizer on the car (looks for a signal from the key), the only ways I've seen this done involve taping the spare key somewhere near the steering column to the antenna can pick up a signal. It's always sounded a bit sketchy to me.

Thanks for the advise. We install about a thousand remote starts a year, and have shy'd away from volvo's, bmw's, vw, audi, porche, mercedes vehicles because of thier difficulty in making them work work consistently.

My top tech is trying a couple non-routine "creative" combinations of a security bypass, transponder ring and remote unit. We'll wee if this works, hopefully it does!!

If the tranny fluid was flushed and a new filter was installed, pan cleaned etc...., would'nt that eliminate the possibility of stirring up existing contamination and hurting the tranny? It is not the GM transmission btw.

Anybody know where I can download a manual or buy one? Would be especially helpful if it had detailed schematics.

...Or anyone know how to adjust the factory xenon lights?

Thanks again, in advance

Brian

The fear of flushes isn't unique to the I6/T6 equipped S80s with the 4 speed GM transmission -- S60 and V70 drivers with the Aisin Warner have felt the pain and shy away from the practice unless first undertaken by 50,000 miles. Swedespeed is swimming in threads about this.

I've got halogens, so I unfortunately can't comment on xenon adjustments.

I flushed my 850 with 190K on the clock and did not have an issue. I did drain and then refilled the transmission before I started the flush but 6K later and she is still fine. Of coarse, I did sell her a few weeks ago but the guy that brought it told me that he got back to Chicago without an issue.

I see lots of failbait in this thread.

Flushing the trans is perfectly fine @100k. If you flush and it dies, it was going to die anyways. I regularly flush 100k plus trannies with no problems. You will need to use either the Volvo fluid of the Mobil 1 3309 ATF. Expect to use between 12-14qts. A quick search on this site will yield the necessarily flush instructions ;) Repeated drain and fills are not the best idea. Also, there is no serviceable filter on your trans. The trans fluid dipstick is hidden below the lower radiator hose, right where it goes over top of the trans pan. Trans fluid level can only be checked while the engine is running.

I would advise you against the remote start, I have only seen this end in disaster. There was recently a discussion about this on 99+ cars, where someone said it could be done successfully , but I can't seem to find the thread. This job has big potential to end in disaster, especially with an incompetent installer.

If I recall, the xenon headlights can only be adjusted with VIDA, which is pretty much only available at dealers.

Brian, you are pushing away alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Please keep that attitude if you are in my market. I will send you my contact info on where to tell YOUR customers to have remote starts done in their Euro vehicle. I will take the job! :D

Volvo = EASY, everything is at the keyless module 4 diodes for the doors and one for the trunk. 556uw key in the box or equivilent done.

BMW's = Medium, even the newer E92/93's car be done (08+ M3 hardtop/soft top)

VW = Another medium/hard car = Upcharge $$$

AUDI = Glorified VW

Porsche = We have a 2006 Cayenne Turbo S with remote start/alarm/pager, Kenwood Excelon DNX9140 ect ect ect

Mercedes = OMG easy car, MAJOR MAJOR $$ on the new stuff big time. remote starts done in under 2hrs with MAXIMUM profit if you sell it right you should make $500 + per car

Land Rovers/Range Rovers = Thats something i do not want to do remote starters on, those ended up in major fail. personally never attempted, help out another shop owner on a few of these.

You own your installer, not vice versa. You are the boss, they tell you its hard, you tell them, theres others out there that think its easy. How does the unemployment line look from here? LOL

I'm harsh when it comes to installers telling me bullshit. I personally make sure the high end cars are done correctly.

I always get looped into this stereo type. its cool. Major fail!

I was told you cant automate the top closing and opening. You cant do remote start on manual cars. You cant replace the stereo in your car. You have to goto the dealer to by pass that stupid auto fan "feature" that turns on 45 minutes to clear out the moisture. you cant auto open and close the sunroof.

All the above...did it done it, next. Oh, yes it was on a Volvo(P1 and or P2 chassis) :D

Had a local service writer at a VOLVO dealer tell me all my Codes were directly related to whomever installed my stereo. I went in for a SRS light and a extra key, this was after i broke a small clip for the passenger side airbag. i wanted to punch him in the head. my stereo was installed 1.5 years earlier!!

i got a remote start with zero problems. i think i payed 400 for the viper alarm/ starter and anoth 160 for a second key and another 80 for some security transmitter box to trick the ecu. best investment ever. i bought it when i worked grave yard shift at caterpillar. nice having your car warmed up when it's -8 out or vice versa in the summer. some guy at volvo said it wasnt a good idead due to some fiber optics issue but i've had it on for about a year and a half with no problems and only replaced the battery in the remote twice with daily use.

  • 3 weeks later...

We got the remote in and working perfectly and now installing remotes in volvo's, (thank you for the call Ghost Shadow.

So, how do I get this VIDA sorfware or whatever it is to adjust the HID headlights?

Does anyone know of an online or downloadable repair manuel for this vehicle? I saw the haynes one and it is not realy very well done.

I just replaced the lower control arm bushings, and motor mount upper and lower bushings with IPD's blue ones, wow! what a difference in handeling and so simple and easy to do.

I need to change the timing belt and pulleys, since I've never done one in a volvo before, is it realy much different than say any of the other ones I've done in the past? any tricks to it that I should know about before hand?

New problem crept up, power steering is extremely stiff, kinda feels like pump pressure is not feeding the rack. Rack seems tight with no rack to pinion play so how would I troubleshoot if its a rack or a pump on this car?

I am realy begining to fall inlove with this car!!! Great mileage, great ride, handles nice, looks great and AWD in the snow is fabulous!!!!

Appreciate all the help you guys....
