Who said a safety box can't be cool?

I replaced my OEM speakers on my 98 V70 AWD with 6 1/2 4-way pioneers in the front and 3-way 5 1/4 sony's in the rear. They sound very good overall...the clarity is superb. If I could do it over again I would have purchased bigger rear speakers. It fits one size bigger. Also, definately add a small sub-woofer for jazz related listening or maybe a 12 for heavier use.

I have a JVC headunit and I have Pioneer 6 1/2 in my front and rear doors. I am going to upgrade the tweeters eventually and get a sub and amp as well but i am not sure whether i am going to mess with the rear deck or not.

I replaced the front door speakers with pioneer rev component 6.5s powered by a p20 jbl amp. for base i added a infinity baselink sub

turned all other speakers off, this moved the stage (mid's /hi's) to the front of the car the sub does a good job filling the rest of the car with sound

I now have true and clear left / right / front /rear sound

see my car for pics

rockfords in all 4 doors in stock location. 6X9s in floor and 10" sub in floor (see sig pic). Custom kicks hopefully coming soon. I need an idea for a speaker grill in the rear, the stock ones wouldn't fit.

REAR DECK S70

The rear right 8" mid-bass driver just blew. Great excuse to get replacements. The 8" Mid-Bass I am finding are all 100-200w RMS power handling and I'm going to use an upgraded 26x4 RMS head unit so I'm looking at 6x9 or 6x8 full range to replace the 8" in the rear deck. Has anyone done this with luck? I just searched on VS and didn't find anything on this, so forgive my ignorance on the topic if it has been covered before. Also, should I pick up some 6x9 or 6x8 baffles at the same time since the rear deck is open air mount.

I'm not looking to do any custom fabrication unless it's drilling new holes.

Thank you.

be careful when replacing the head unit b/c you will be powering 4 speakers in the rear with it... will probably sound crappy. the front only has the tweet on the dash and the 6.5 in the door.

If I were you, I would either A) get an amp and power two 8's in the rear. B) get the OLD memphis belle off ebay (amp) for about $2-300 - it does 6 chan. use the first 4 chans to power your doors and the last two to power those 100-200W rms 8's you put in the rear.

Of course this would require paying more money. but hey, Do it right or don't do it at all.

or C) disconnect the rear 8's and put in the head unit

or D) just replace the head unit and put in some 6X9's. I really dont know how it will sound with 2 sets of speakers on the rear chans that barely push 26watts per chan.

I hope I was more helpful than confusing

Thanks Jamaica2g for the suggestions. I got some more questions.

I still have a 5 channel ALPINE V12 super high quality amp that powered 9 speakers before in my GTI (the amp is sitting in its retail box, collecting dust in my closet). It's 25w rms x 4 and 150 x 1 for the sub. I figured since it's been many years since I actually valued "thump" and "bump in the trunk", I just wanted a full MID (those oem 8's are perfect). And I don't like the idea of having extra weight/wires running around the car. I'd like to avoid using any external amp if possible. According to the Volvo site at http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/1998/1.../98sv70_167.htm the SC-816 has a whopping power output of: 4 x 25w (10% dist.) --- I'm assuming that this is not RMS. That would qualify as underpowered.

Do 6x9's fit the 8" hole confirmed? Again, I'm looking at maximum mod, drilling ideally, no other custom fabrication.

If I were to reconsider, I would just power the 6.5 doors, the 6x9 rears - replacing all four speakers with high quality (Infinity, Polk, Alpine, etc) 2 and 3 ways. That's four channels at 26RMS, a bit of a better match. This would also render a "wiring harness" useless, correct?

OK, I forgot about searching on the net and this is what I came up with:

rear deck speaker replacement

Seems like this is for the 850 and owners talk of 5x7 and 6x9's and 6x8's involving cutting with dremel and not fitting completely right, but "sounding 100% better."

Volvo / Dynaudio Audio System Upgrade for the S70

For dashboard mounting there are two "soft dome" 1.1" tweeters with ferro fluid damped voice coils and neodymium magnet system which gives a high power output and efficiency.

For door mounting there are four 6.5" bass/mid-range speakers with rubber suspended magnesium polymer cones. The ventilated magnet system has a 75mm aluminum voice coil which has very good heat dissipation capacity.

Two more tweeters are mounted in the parcel shelf together with two 8" woofers which have a range down to 35 Hz.

S70 OWNER QUESTION: Does anyone have 6x9's or 6x8's or any size (6.5, 6.75, etc.) for that matter in their REAR DECK (8" openings)???

If so, please chime in, thank you. I want to know if it can be done without major modification.

yeah, i've got the infinity reference 4x6's in the rear deck of my s70. just a couple of screws in the old housing and they fit right in diagonally. i might put up some pics if you're interested, let me know.

msch,

Thanks for the update! Yeah, please do post photos of the rear deck 4x6's. Can you let us know why you chose 4x6's instead of 6x8's?

Oh yeah, how did you mount those tweeters in the dash? I had a suspicion (sp) that there might be a 3.5" hole in the dash with tweeter mounted in a speaker adapter.

Looking forward to the photos.

What I did when I had components in my S70 is I had hooked up the wiring harness to the head unit and then divided up the tweeters from the mids in order to keep the signals from the crossover separate. It will take a while to do the whole wiring but it is worth it in the long run. The clarity is great.

The 5 chan amp is the best idea possible!

set up the 4 chans to the 4 doors and the 5th chan divided for two 8" replacements :-) Woofers :-D MUHAHAHAHAHAHA. I've seen some free air woofers that fit in the back shelf but you would have to make the hole on the trunk side a little larger to accomodate the magnet.

I think the space in the dash will just barely fit a 3.5" speaker or tweet. Just use a screw driver and check it out. the panel pops right out without any problems and then the tweet just has two pins holdin it down.

Adrian,

Thanks for the input! You know, I agree with the 5 ch. idea - it's looking like that is the best option as I've been told that pretty much any speaker in the rear 8" deck will need some kind of modification. I would hate to have to do mods on a 6x8 - might as well just do an 8" if I'm going to have to do mods or have to create a wood/plastic plate to cover up any open space on a strange speaker shape.

I'm currently piecing together a system with a lot of reading and research. Will check back here with updates.

hey- sorry it's taking so long to get the pics up...i'll try to do it tonight. i went with the 4x6's because i actually had a '96 850 glt before i hopped into my t5 and they were the closest fit to the ridiculous size that was in the rear deck of that car.

i'll post back once i've had a chance to get the pics up :)
