70 Series Speaker Sizes

I'll second that bump for pics.

Also, I have the system all laid out - just waiting some of the items to arrive.

I looked a bunch of double din cd players but they didn't have enough preouts and most of the time they had an MD player or tape player - both of which I do not use. In summary, I must've spent about 6-8 hours studying different options. I came down to this: Must have 4V or 5V three preouts, must have MP3 capability, and that's about it. I almost settled for the Panasonic head unit with 26 RMS wattage x 4 with the digital amp as I was going to just run the stock speakers. Then my 8" rear passenger rear deck speaker blew and I just had to go aftermarket 100% - so the head unit had to have three preouts at 4V or better yet 5V.

The last item I am missing from the complete list above is a SINGLE POCKET DIN. I've heard the Metra turbo pocket is a good one and the Scoche (sp?) is the other - Crutchfield lists a Honda/Nissan pocket as a match for the Volvo S70 sedan. And it's all around $20... does anyone have hookups on the single din pocket - for crying out loud, it's a single piece of black molded plastic!

Bump for Pictures of the 4x6 mounted speakers!!!

Yes a Honda sleeve will fit the S70, I have never seen a direct fit.

Funny, the choiced topic on what worked for you. I choose to upgrade the stock head unit for an Alpine head (CDA 7845) add a 9 band Kenwood EQ (KGC 6042) with 2 10" MTX blue thunder subs (old skool) in the trunk, Subs are powered with a Sherwood amp 100W X2 RMS (under rated) and the interior a Sherwood 50w x 4. 12v power is ran with 4 Awg with an added 1 farad cap.

The Sherwood amp is running 4 ohm stable for the interior utilizing the stock speaker set up. With the freqencies crossed over the stock paper cones don't sound that bad.

The Alpine head is a half din size and the kenwood EQ is a quater size, it was difficult in finding the right sleeve. i just modified a honda accords to slip in.

hey- sorry it's taking so long to get the pics up...i'll try to do it tonight.  i went with the 4x6's because i actually had a '96 850 glt before i hopped into my t5 and they were the closest fit to the ridiculous size that was in the rear deck of that car.

i'll post back once i've had a chance to get the pics up :)

S70 STEREO COMPLETE

I'm really happy, or have been happy, with the stock stereo setup - it's actually very full sounding and the ergonomics of the factory head unit are excellent. Though I'm not a sound engineer or professional audiophile or competitive stereo nut, I can state the following because I've built a number of stereo systems and I'm a DJ/Producer so sound is important to me.

The ideal things you want analog (i.e. knobs) are the volume and the bass/treble controls - all of which are on the stock head unit. Aftermarket relies to heavily on menus. I could tell that the factory head unit was underpowered for eight speakers. I listen to all kinds of music like you but I primarily listen to Deep House and Hip-Hop - two music genres that can easily reveal underpowered systems. I ended up blowing the rear deck mid-bass driver and after a lot of thinking, I was forced to upgrade.

I've had two cars previously and both were hooked up on the stereo (teenage and college years). The first, boomy bass was all I cared about (West Coast Gangster Rap: Dr. Dre, Mac Dre, RBL Posse, Too Short, etc.) and the second, I got involved with Napster at its prime before it hit mainstream and got shut down (Electronica to Hip Hop to Rock to Experimental - Napster changed my world) so I made the system with more mids and tighter bass.

I appreciate a stock looking and sounding system until you really press it and it is able to keep up. I was tired of looking around and finding incomplete (read: ghetto) setups around the net. Volvospeed always has the goods and helpful members so I wanted to really do my homework and post up. But still, I didn't find my answer, especially when it came to bass.

A trunk box bandpass/ported subwoofer, in my humble opinion, is a) heavy B) ugly c) ghetto and it also takes up -valuable- trunk space. Ultimately, I can assure you that using a subwoofer, instead of using the 8" mid-bass drivers, will kill a lot of MID's in your sound - that's everything that I like about a stock system cause I cant stand tinny highs and deep lows of aftermarket stereos -- they're without anything in the middle - that's where the PUNCH is.

Here is the ultimate, clean, efficient stereo for the Volvo S70:

Head Unit: MP3 capable, (3) 4v or better yet, 5v preouts

Amp: 5 ch. (4ch + 1ch for subwoofer)

8 Speakers (Dash -tweeters-, Front Doors -6.5 shallow mount-, Rear Doors -6.5-, Rear Deck -8.0 mid-bass-):

OEM Volvo Pocket Din (factory is double din)

OEM Volvo Switch (aerial down to keep antenna down during cd play)

8 guage Amp Power Kit (power and ground cables)

17 ft. RCA Interconnects (2 ch. x 3) (low noise, twisted, shielded)

100 ft. Speaker Wire (low noise and shielded)

Since I haven't seen photos of the stock speakers on this forums yet, I thought I'd better capture some for you VS members:

Actually, I had an MB Quart side by side with the factory speaker and I almost mistakened them to be the same. Interestingly enough, the factory head unit (CD/Tape Double Din) is MADE IN JAPAN by Mitsbuishi ... for ECLIPSE!!!

Specific Fitment Issues:

Please note that for the rear deck, no cutting is required if you get shallow-mount speakers. Likewise, for the door panels, you use the factory speaker bracket and for the front doors only, you'll need "shallow-mount" just like the rear deck. For the front dash, no need to replace the 1" tweeters as they seem high quality enough to justify against modifying bracket and at least somewhat comparable to MB Quart and Alpine Component Tweeters.

Vibration in Rear Deck from upgraded speakers:

Use Dynamat Extreme Speaker Kits. They work without heat and you apply it to the rear deck which is like a lightweight aluminum sheetmetal from my guess. Vibrations carry loudly from it so put down the dynamat and sound will improve, proven.

6.5 bostons in all stock locations and 10" subs sunk into the seats , best speakers out there besides infinitey. really crazy sitting against a sub, pretty pounding stuff (oh this was not my car) :D

Does Infinitey have speakers that will fit in the doors (98 V70 XC)without having to modify anything? The reason I ask is that I can get a deal on Infinitey speakers!

Yeah, I also went completely aftermarket. Finding a set of "good" 8" speakers for the rear's gonna be a pain. no good company still makes that size, I either suggest going with the stock ones which actually sound really good, or just make a custome enclosure for some 6x9. also I would strongly recomend installiang MTX Tunder speakers through=out the car, My God will you ever love it.

Though U should buy some enclosures for them cause the bass is blocked by the tweets.

The rear speakers will be the only rear problem.

6 1/4" - 6 1/2" speakers on the doors, depending on your prefference, no real difference.

Amps...You can buy a 300 watt MTX Amp for under 300, I mean if u wanna spend the monmey, it'll make those speakers pound, Then u can simply run a seperate amp for ur subs. I also suggest running a cross-over for the speakers. This can adjust the sound in ways that the stereo cant.

Ohh...And Infinity dose have speakers that will fit in the doors, withough modifying anything. They carry all the same sizes as most other companies. Though, u should put some enclosure cones, Infinity speakers have the same problem as MTX speakers, The bass sound is blocked by the highs from the tweeters.
