FAST850R
Hi, I have 1996 850r and I am not used to drive an automatic car. Now I am getting used to with my Volvo, I am about to drive harder and faster. Before i do that, I need some advice from you guys. Do you shift the gear when you drive? Like putting it to 3 when you about to enter a freeway, then punch it till rpm reaches to 6000 rpm and shift it to D....something like that. is it ok to drive a Volvo with constant gear shifting? I have been driving manual transmission cars, and when I test drove my Volvo, I thought it might be pretty fun to drive it even though it's an automatic. It is a fun car, but it's nothing like driving a manual transmission car. I am sure you guys know what I am talking about. Let me know how you guys drive your Volvo!!!! ozzimark
I use a clutch and stick with an H pattern to change gears. If you don't, pretending that it is a manual won't make it more fun to drive, it'll just be annoying when it shifts significantly after you wanted it to, or before you wanted it to when you push the throttle. Learn how the TCU shifts the trans based on load and make the car shift that way, not by messing with the gear selection lever. If you want to rev it out to redline, floor it.
JVC
don't shift the auto unless you absolutely need to, not just every day whenever you drive, unless it's tip tronic... which its not. So my suggestion... manual swap it.
TRACStar
The only time I play with it is if I'm racing someone from a roll. If you shift to low from a roll less than 70mph it will keep the trans in second.
Bah
Yea i don't do that lol... The most i do, is throw it in 3rd on some back roads. THE best way to have fun with the AT on these cars, is to faux shift. I sit there with my hand on the knob, foot on the fake clutch, and floor it, let off and let it shift, floor it again. You'll learn the shift points if you try too. The speedometer goes out sometimes, so i luckily knew my RPMs. I never use A/C and i generally drive with only me in the car, so i had a really good idea. You can have fun with it! But i do this with the N/A. With the 96R, i haven't done the tranny fluid yet so i don't even try. Learn at what speed the drop down is...i think its sub-35? You floor it and it jumps up, then let off and it shifts back. Its all probably no good for the car..but its a 93 NA. Manual swap is the only true way in these cars to have a gain from the shifting. Sport mode will just hold the gear longer so eh...just have fun with the AT, and if youve got a turbo and more likely to bust the AT, save up for the manual swap

If the trans switch is in sport it will stay in 2nd until almost a complete stop of its in econ it will downshift to first at 25 or maybe 30 either way its not fun lol. And when its locked in second it will still downshift to first if your under 30mph and floor it.
turbor850
Back when I raced my old R, I would go Sport mode and go right to L @ 50 mph, brake boost a bit and then as soon as I hit it went right to D and just left it so I was able to correct torque steer like a bitch . . . Sport will stay in second until you stop, if I leave it in low at a stop sign and roll through at less than 5mph it stays in second .
Zappo
I shift it all the time. I downshift before getting on the freeway, pop it into nuetral at lights and stop signs, etc. Engine brake with it also. I have been doing it for 140,000 miles now without issue. I leave it in sport mode at all times because i don't like the way it reacts in econ. Now, I don't drop it into 2nd on the freeway or stupid stuff. Account_Deleted_T5M
Its called an Auto, leave it in Drive, i'm a hypocrite though sometimes when i drive the 850 i manually shift for maximum rpmzz, if your going from a dig, remember that there is a 500rpm lag between the time you shift from L - 3 and from 3 - D, i'm not sure what the turbo models hit the limiter at, but i shift the 850 at 6300rpms and it'll shift at 6800
damitzmike
put it in 3rd from rollie my experience when I put it in L is when im getting close to redline and shift up it hesitates for a second or two and always hits the rev limiter so i dont do that anymore.
