I Think It'S Little Slow...?

FAST850R

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just saw this clip, and 0-60 time is 7sec area.....Don't you guys think it should be faster than that?

I mean 240hp e36 BMW M3 goes 5.6sec...I know it's a manual gear box, but still, 7.4 sec is pretty damn slow for 240hp sedan...no?

Well, actually, the time is from wagon so I believe sedan should be little bit faster than 7.3sec.

they are only off by a bit compared to "factory specs"

1996 Volvo 850 R 0-60=6.9 seconds 1/4 mile=15.3 seconds

I would say it is their driving technique, and also there is a difference between FWD, RWD, proper launching from a stop and a bunch of other factors

Think of what some other performance cars were running back in 1996. Also keep in mind, the M3 was designed from the ground up to be a race car. That's the only reason it was built. The Volvo is designed to be a family sedan, and one of the safest cars in the world.

Also of note, the Volvo 850 Turbo wagon's top speed gave it the record of world's fastest production station wagon, which it held until just recently (over 14 years).

put that 850r next to the e36 m3 on the interstate and see what happens...

there are alot of factors that you have to consider when watching a video like that, is the car up to par?.. is the driver skilled at all or a newb?... how are the road condishions etc.

Heh...the 850R gets killed, that's what happens. E36 M3 is significantly faster. Just looking at the trap speeds shows you which car has the stronger top end.

I needed an 18psi tune, 3" turbo-back exhaust and an intake to run 14.4 @ 98.2. That's almost exactly what a stock E36 M3 runs, ET and trap.

In fact...an '04 S60R is just a bit faster than the E36 M3...I've seen 14.4 @ 100 posted in a couple road tests on the S60R.

Here's a good road test, comparing the 855R to 3 other luxury cars. The 855R had the 2nd highest top speed; quarter mile was 15.3 @ 92.9:

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/112_9505_destination_desolation_road_test/performance.html

The T-5R, which is also available as a sedan, certainly shouldn't feel inadequate about its performance: It sprinted to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and reached the quarter-mile mark in 15.3 seconds while going 92.9 mph. And if you keep the hammer down for 3 miles, the T-5R will top out at an awesome 153 mph. Combine that with respectable handling numbers-0.83 g on the skidpad, 66.0 mph in the slalom, and a 115-foot 60-0 mph stopping distance-and you've got the fastest, best-performing production station wagon ever offered in the United States. Except for acceleration, the T-5R beat the manual-transmission 540i in each of our test-track events, and it flew to a top speed 23 mph faster than the BMW's speed-limited velocity. It also topped the XJR in the slalom, stopping distance, and top speed.

...pretty cool that when you compare it to BMW's family hauler (6-speed 540i), the 855 T-5R kills the BMW in almost every category. What's that, Mr. World's Best Sports Sedan? Station Wagon got you sweating?

i would agree that trap speed would show what car had stronger top end..

but i ran 14.9 @ 99.7 in my car compleatly stock, i even had the paper air filter in it... i only needed a mbc@ 14 psi, and i cone filter to run 14.1 @ 102....

i didn't think the t5m had that much of an advantage over the auto 850 turbo's....i keep thinking of them as the same car

Heh...yeah, it's pretty vastly different in performance. The extra power, the manual gearbox, and the traction control all add up. My auto has the usual mods and I still wasn't trapping as fast as your car was stock.

I'm sure with the age of these cars, it could go either way. I've beat cars at speed that supposedly trap faster than mine (beat an LS1 Z28 on the highway...those should be capable of 106 ish traps!).

Certainly the M3 gets off the line quicker, but thinking about it, the TQ curve is vastly different...so it might be possible that into the triple digits, the 850 would make up some ground.

Still...9/10 of a second is a commanding lead, and 5+ mph is substantial. The M3 is quite a bit faster than a stock Turbo wagon, no bones about it. Once you're modded, it's a different ball game.

agreed 100%, you honestly can't compaire anything that has been modded, esspeshily when its a turbocharged car.

my mother had a e36 328is for awhile... i loved that car... some day i still might get a e36 m3 sedan.
