Stereo Oddity

Hello everyone, this is my first post on VolvoSpeed. I decided to post here because as I have been researching this issue for several days this site seems to have the most knowledge floating around on it when it comes to audio equipment/issues.

Background info: 1992 volvo 960 w/ buku miles on it (around 190k). For the most part it drives fine. I have two major electrical issues which i am trying to solve. I have been slowly fixing small issues with the car as I go.

Would prefer not to take the car into the shop for either (mal)function, pretty handy on my own, have done audio work in vehicles before but for some reason this one is really causing me to curse the gods of sound.

As you know the 960 has an 8 spkr stereo 2 front deck, 2 front door, 2 rear door, 2 rear deck. When I first purchased the vehicle all 8 worked. Something happened one day when i had a few buds in the car and the rear 6 speakers won't work.

All I have now is the front 2 deck speakers working, the other 6 have no sound, no pop, no power.

Related issue. Fuse #32 in the drivers side panel is marked by factory as stero/amplifier.10a. it is blown. Replaced fuse w/ 10a.. blew immediately.. foolishly replaced w/ 20a.. backside of fuse panel began emitting smoke, smoke came thru driver side deck speaker opening, and out the vents. I'm guessing (duh) that I simply provided a bit too much current (only for a second before I pulled the fuse out) to a faulty wire. So what wire? how do i get to the back of the fuse panel to do a little digging? And what is the appropriate wiring for a functional factory system. Its got a regular volvo cassette/amfm with a graphic eq below it...

I'm as fried as fuse 32 over this.. any help or insight to this awesome electrical work would be splendid.

thanks in advance.

You probably blew your amp, killed the fuse due to a shorted amp and then REALLY bit yourself in the ass with the bigger fuse.

You'll need to pull the amp and check all the wiring to see if you melted any of it. ( And start amp shoppin'...)

Hopefully, the wiring didn't melt and the amp made all the smoke. The fuse panel should come apart

with a few TORX screws, but I'm a '98 V70 guy and haven't had that model year 850 apart.

Great time for an amp upgrade...;)

Yes, either your amp is toast or you have a very nasty short somewhere. remove amp and replace with known good one and cross them fingers. If you're VERY lucky you didn't melt any wires.

as a rule, just cuz you really should have known better (and did?)

NEVER USE THE WRONG AMPERAGE OF FUSE EVER, ANYWHERE.

definitely check ALL the wiring from the fusebox for charring or melting, check under the dash as well. You don't want to short something going over a bump.

fill in your location and see if someone nearby wants to help give you a look-over.
