spottieottie
How do you think the margin of error would be for just a simple deck install from them? I am planning on putting a CD player in my Dad's Jeep for Christmas and are planning to get it done at CC. I could probably do it myself, but I'll get free install w/ the deck, and I won't always be around to fix it if it fouls up, it'll just be easier this way. Also I can't think of one thing that Fry's isn't more than impressive with so their probably the best bet IMO.←What's up guys, just wanted to give you'll an update on this. I just got my Dad's new Alpine deck CDA-9825 installed in his Jeep Grand Cherokee at Circuit City in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was my big Christmas gift for him. Everything went great and it was a VERY clean install. It looks good and there is even a nice little pocket (about 1 disc worth) underneath the deck (single DIN), so it looks nice. Something I learned while I was there is that Circuit City used a "Smart Harness" to go from the Jeep's harness to the Alpine deck so that they didn't have to do any solering or crimping. I'm going to look at it tomorrow a little better so I can get a better idea / visual of everything so I can explain it better. Sounds like a good idea, funny thing is when I asked the manager about it he relied "It saves us about 15-20 min on installs", I said "It's also better because the connection is less likely to fail". He goes "Yeah, that too". Lesson 1: Don't tell your customer's you are charging them $17 more for another harness so they can be lazy on installs and then still charge the same $50 for installation. (If I didn't get free installation I'd be PISSED)
AnthonyR
Yup, those smart harnesses kick jerk. It goes from deck->universal->car. Saves alot of time and much cleaner install. Although They don't exist for the Volvo's. CC has an exclusive contract from Metra for these, so they are only avail there

The "smart" turbo connect harnesses instead of going to regular wire, they go to a universal plug. Then you buy the other side of that plug fro your deck. So absolutely no sodering or crimping (Unless you have a chrysler product with a qay jerk grounding strap <_<

GM cars are pretty straightforward on that, Honda's are a oh yeah! in comparison. You can check to make sure they crimped and cleaned everything up well enough with a screwdriver. Guest Guest
What would you guys recommend for putting in an FM-modulated cd changer? Is it easy enough to put in myself, or should I take it to CC? I would think you would just need to mount it somewhere in your trunk and connect it to the battery... but then again, I've never worked on a D.I.Y. car audio project... HPTDoh
Right, so I just tried today to install an aftermarket HU on my 96 850... Had everything ready to the point of plugging the vehicles wire harness to the HU's, when i noticed they were WAY off! I checked the packaging the harness adaptor came in to make sure it didn't say something like "98 and up Volvo".. nope the year was correct.. so I made some phone calls. Turns out installing a new HU into a Volvo w/ a "Premium Sound System" is much more complicated than just the regular system. Apparently theres some sodering and rewiring involved. I dont know too much about this area... could someone point me to a good FAQ or explain this a little better?
maiku
if the harness is correct, then it should work wellcheck the FAQ's at the top of the Audio section for some helpi installed a system myself and it took all of 10 minutes to do the wires
wills
Did someone say electrical tape? How about spending a little $$$ on shrink wrap and soldering? I have bought things at Best Buy that were good deals, I just don't think I would want them working on my car or bikes audio system. :o

I would think you would just need to mount it somewhere in your trunk and connect it to the battery... but then again, I've never worked on a D.I.Y. car audio project...← I wouldnt suggest buying that at all. Get a real CD player and plug it in or just get a aftermarket deck with mp3 support and you can get ride of all those CDs. Or if you have ipod/other mp3 player plug that thing in. I dont belive in having CD that i can only listen to at FM quality
HPTDoh
I'm using the factory amp, using the custom cable I'm getting from Slater... so that shouldnt be a problem. And the wire crimping I did from the HU to the wrong adaptor took all of ten minutes as well. But the thing is a rep. from CarDomain.com told me putting in an aftermarket HU is more complicated for a "Premium Sound System" involving hard wiring, among other things.. she didnt get too specific... Theoretically, it should be a cake-walk, but I can't find any SPECIFIC information.THANKS FOR INPUT!
