esitzler
Hi all. Well I think I am hosed... My 99 S80 was running quite rough and I cleaned the ETM, changed the plugs, checked the coils, and finally did a compression test. #3 cylinder is showing a 0 compression. Crap. Has anyone ever done the rings on that engine and how hard is it? The #3 plug was quite fouled with oil, so I think it is the rings. Anyone interested in buying a 99 S80 with a bad cylinder?? I think I'm going to go back to the 850 GLT. I loved that car. Thanks, Eric
Ihatespeedbumps
There is 99% chance you burned an exhaust valve.
esitzler
Would the plug have oil on it if it is the valve? The plug I removed was fouled pretty bad with oil and was quite black. The new plug was wet with oil after only a few miles of driving. Thanks for the reply.
Ihatespeedbumps
It's probably a combination of raw fuel and oil, yes a fouled plug would be normal.
TainterRacing
Most of the time Bad rings will still have some compression just very low with 0psi I would say a valve as well. Hi all. rbodor3
leakdown test will show you, pretty simple and easy if you have an air compressor. Leakdown tester @ harbor freight is like $40 IIRC. Listen for it coming out of your tail pipe will indicate crapped out valve. Either way you'll want to pull the head if it is a bad piston ring, and at that time you'll immediately notice a broke exhaust valve :P
