Cv Boot

The tire place just told my GF that the driver's side CV boot is torn on her 1993 850.

I know that an axle costs more than the boots but I have two concerns about just doing the boots:

1) How do I know if dirt has gotten in and either already caused or will cause damage in the future?

2) I have replaced axles before and it was quick and easy...so from a time standpoint which one takes longer?

If it is going to take the same or less time to replace the axle than just the boot I would rather do that in order to play it safe on the dirt/damage issue.

Any thoughts/advice?

thanks

it takes less time to just replace the axle since when you're replacing the boot you have to take out the axle then take it apart before you reinstall. generally it's cheaper overall just to replace the axle (when you take into account how much your time is worth to you).

to make sure no dirt is in there you would have to inspect the cv joint and clean it while you're doing the boot. you can generally tell if it's bad by just listening to it while its spinning. snaps, crackles and pops will let you know it's bad.

you can source axles from raxles.com for $150 each or go to fcpgroton.com and get an EMPI axle for about $110. people have had problems with cheaper axles so if it were me with the problem I would probably buy one of these axles. local auto parts stores sell them with good warranties sometimes so you could check those out too. i know people have used oreilly's and other axles without problems.
