'00 V70R Rods In 98 T5

98glt-5

Recommended Posts

I was sitting at work thinking about how somewhere I read that the '00 V70R had the strongest rods for that generation. My question is, would they fit in a 98 2.3 liter? I work at a dealer so my cost per rod is about 100 bucks. I'm running a 16t obviously and probably never going to change it to anything bigger. So if they fit, would it be better to go aftermarket, or just pop those in?

They might be, but I'm pretty sure there's zero debate that they are still not as strong as the RSI rods most people are using, which also happen to be ~$100/rod.

If you never plan to go bigger than a 16T and feel confident in your abilities to maintain your car, I don't see a reason to upgrade your rods at all given the labor and cost involved. Unless you want headroom for the future or have bad compression.

Since this seems relevant, what's the cost for rings and bearings? I haven't look at that info in a little while.

H-beams.

From what I understand they are the same rods as the t5 and the only reason that they don't get klobbered by the 19t is that me7 is much more advanced engine management system.

Rumor turned into fact via interwebs.

...and the GLT for that matter. I'm sure I will be "wrong" somehow on this, but VADIS shows the same P/N's for the crank, rods, and head castings for ALL '99- 5 cylinder turbo engines (LPT, HPT, AND R). Only differences for the R are the pistons (of course due to the lower compression ratio) and intake camshaft. Not sure where the "facts" originated regarding the "weaker" LPT internals, but the part numbers don't lie. Anyway, just wanted to share that :)

Right, I was going to say that about the p/n's but wasn't certain. I do think that the head's from the '00r and the '99 glt are different though. Just inspecting from the top town with the plug cover off, they are not the same... but I'm getting off topic.

They might be the strongest, but if your doing any mods, most likely not strong enough, (voice of experience), go with H-beans, RSI's or Lars, GB or not, a very reasonable price for a quality product.
