850 Center Channel Mounting

I've recently scored a nice center channel processor, but I'm stuck on where to mount the speaker. Tan dash pads aren't hard to come by, so I'm all for flush mounting it. Has anyone else done this yet? Planning on using a single coaxial 3".

Pioneer had a couple HU years ago with a flip-out center speaker, but I'm thinking mounting it that low wouldn't be optimum (yet would fit very easy)

thoughts?

Well, considering that the depth where the speaker is mounted isn't very deep, you don't even have one inch for speaker depth. It could be worth while, although not clean, to put a aftermarket center channel, such as the Pioneer TS-CX7 or even the JVC CS-CN100.

As a bit of a warning. The center channel is driven directly by the SC-900/901 headunit and the EQ settings do not affect it. I notice on some bassy music, it tends to pull the bass into the center speaker driving it pretty loud and causing the (stock speaker) to distort. An aftermarket speaker should be able to handle more power than what the headunit can put out, but at the same time, make sure you get a speaker with some good bass response.

damn... was hoping it was at least 2", haven't pulled off the dash in a bit.

not running a 901. running a pioneer HU, and the center channel will be driven via preouts. I'm really only looking for say 800hz-10k as a gentle nudge to the system I have. I was hoping to avoid both the huge dash bump, and the harshness of just a component tweeter.

I've been considering ditching the ashtray and dropping the heater controls... hmmm...

The stock center channel speaker is almost ALL above dash pad.

It's made with the magnet and coil IN the cone, on the top side.

(This one has a snapped off magnet....Don't let it throw ya.)

It hangs maybe a 1/2" below it. The center CC ducts are right there...

That makes me think, perhaps as opposed to avoiding glass bounce, I can use it to my advantage. Hmm... Tan dash pads are pretty cheap, one of those young whippersnappers nearby must have one left over from a charcoal swap. (personally i LOVE the light dash and interior, so much nicer in summer)

I think the glass bounce kinda helps. And Volvo probably has that figured into the Dolby tuning.

I heard somewhere that they paid Alpine a boatload of money for setting up the system to these cars.

Might be a load of BS, but it sure sounds pretty good to ME for stock. I gotta get that sub installed, though...

At least on the x70's, there's more space if you go closer to the windshield. I've been considering a similar install, flush-mounting a center-channel like in the P2 models, and most aftermarket 3.5" co-axials need about 1.5" of mounting depth...it might be possible to put them close to the windshield, but I need to measure to be sure.

Also, Alpine makes a center channel speaker too. Not sure what model, but its on Crutchfield.

I gotta get that sub installed, though...

Volvo made a sub for the x70's?? or are you installing an aftermarket sub?

Sorry, bad Andy, no thread-jacking monkey.gif

I've had all the goodies since before I got this car...

I just need to settle on how I really wanna install it.

Or I'm just lazy. Ask me again next week! ;)
