Svenska
On a 1993 850, the car drives fine, starts fine every time, idles beautifully etc. No CEL is illuminated. There is a humming sound, kind of like an "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" sound (like the old ignition reminder continuous sound if you left your key in the ignition) coming from the tank. It begins from the moment the key is turned to position II, and stays on while the engine is running. I just replaced the fuel pump with a Volvo-brand pump tonight - NO CHANGE. It is definitely a fuel delivery issue. It is definitely from within the tank, I put my ear up to it and heard it. What else could be making this sound from within the tank if it's not the pump???? whoa
Maybe the pump is struggling because of a clogged fuel filter, or a leaky fuel filler cap?
Svenska
Good point. The filter was changed about 5K miles ago. Although it could be clogged from bad fuel. Weird though, the car accelerates the way it always has...
Kevin.
My car does this intermittently. Still has the original fuel pump but I changed the fuel filter awhile ago. Hasn't done it recently but it doesn't bug me that much.
Svenska
I just tried changing gas caps with my other 850. No help. I happened to have a fuel filter too, I changed that and no change... The vibration/humming is definitely coming from the supply hose at the pump. The one with the yellow tape on it is making the noise, the return is silent... TRACStar
Is it really loud? Its not uncommon to hear the pump. Are you sure it didn't always sound like that and now you just notice it because your looking? I have a Walbro and you can hear it 5-10ft away from the car if its quiet enough outside. Svenska
No, this is loud. My brother-in-law is clueless about cars and drives almost all of the time. Even he noticed something was humming louder than usual. I have heard a healthy fuel pump hum, this is louder. If you put your hand on the delivery connection at the pump, you can feel and hear the humming - almost as if air were being sucked in and causing a lot of noise. If air were being sucked in of course, the car wouldn't drive as well as it does.
