Doubledin Install Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just registerd because I've found this site seems to have the most info WRT audio knowledge for the older Volvo's.

I'm trying to install a doubledin (Pioneer Premier FH-P800BT) into the dash of my '95 960 wagon. I have the correct wiring harness adapter, I've already wired the unit and tested functionality. It works, it plays the speakers, etc. etc. However, I can't figure out for the life of me how I'm going to mount this into my dash. I've seen it's been done a couple times, but not many. This HU did not come with a mounting sleeve, and I know I need to sand down the rails on the sides of the opening to make the unit fit properly. Outside of that, what have you guys done to make the DD's fit and mount securely int he dash of these cars???

Thanks for all the info, I searched thru 25 pages of threads before making a post, but nothing really that pertained to my question.

you would need to buy a cage like this

i know there is a thread showing how its done.. i'll see if i can look it up

The HU doesn't support a sleeve though.

I guess it would work for centering the unit, but I'd still need a way to secure it from sliding out.

I already own the unit, and do not want any kind of navi or screen. Just need some help getting what I have mounted properly is all :)

I did, however, find a picture of the same HU in the same kind of car, over on turbobricks. I sent the owner a PM, I'll have to link that thread here in the morning.

ISO-DIN mount your new Pioneer HU. Basically, you mount the HU to the cage, insert the cage into the dash cavity, and fasten the cage (with HU already inside) down to the dash cavity.

That's what I did with mine, and it works fine, very secure and sits nice and centered.

Since I bought a "generic" GM DDIn cage, I had to drill new holes in the cage to allow the set screws to hold the Pioneer to the cage, but that was mainly because I custom-mounted the unit to get the right depth.

I took a dremel and cut 4 small grooves into the corners of the dash cavity to allow the 4 tabs on the cage to be bent downwards into the grooves I cut and lock the cage, and therefore Pioneer HU, in place.

My Pioneer DDIn.

Good luck!!

goto any local stereo shop and walk in and ask for a double din basket or cage. if they look at you funny leave, they do not know WTF you are talking about and are probably going to tell you a double din does not fit into this car.

does not matter what cage it is. get the matching trim piece.

all three cars in the sig have double din navigation units, two eclipse one pioneer.

best way to install it is take out the glove box so you can reach behind the unit and move the wires out of the way when it goes back into the cavity. get some thick foam double stick tape. stick about a 2-3 inch piece on each of the sides towards the edge of the radio before it slides all the way in. the tape will secure it in, it will be tight, trust me on that one.

also pioneer does make a double din kit for these radios. never stocked them probably never will. any shop will be smart to have them extra from other jobs and sell them for $10-20 :P

the cage and trim piece on the BTCC car is from a Kenwood DNX9960, yes the 9960 is a 2010 model that is $1800 retail. not that it matters :D just referencing that unit since it will fit the 850's dash like this one will. matter of fact any kenwood double din basket will work.

Thanks. I see the pic is a 700 series, 740 I'd presume? Does that carbon-looking dash piece come off? In my 960, it appears as if the woodgrain is actually part of the dash, everything appears like it's one piece. I'm used to being able to remove the front part of the dash, install a radio, and reinstall the dash to cover up the edges of the trim piece. I do have the trim piece that came with my Pioneer, is that what you were referring to, or do I need a matching trim piece for w/e sleeve I end up with? I have an audioshop next to my work that I can grab that at, I was going to have them tint my car soon anyways, and I know the guy thru the local BMW club (I'm a BMW guy at heart, this is my first venture into the volvo world).

what car is a 700 series?

have the stereo shop do your radio install. it will be easier.

I'd rather do it myself, I'm fairly capable. Capable enough to buy one of these things with a blown HG (and already partially taken apart I might add) and bring it back to life having never touched one before, and diagnose WHY it failed. Problem is I've just never seen a dash setup like this before. Mounting a HU with foam tape seems sketchy at best, and I'd certainly never allow an install shop to get away with poorly mounting a unit for me in this manor.

By 700 series, I meant 740, as I'm not sure if there are other 7 models besides the 740.

Kendogg/Noob you think you know how to install a radio. You do not know where to begin nor do you know what is going to be required to install a radio into your car. if i gave you a roll of 2" 3m foam tape you would not even know what to do with it. You should not be so quick to judge what will work in your car or not. I do own a stereo shop and live and breathe 12volt ALL DAY EVERYDAY 6 days a week. I am giving you SOLID advice from everyday experience. If you need to speak to a knowledgeable person about this my store number is 215-473-1953 (steve with the volvo)

Volvospeed is predominately FWD cars a 700 series car will be RWD. I own all FWD/AWD cars the picture i showed you is from a FWD P1 1997 850R with carbon fiber overlay.

This guy knows how to install radios too, so he thought...

I've been installing my own equipment for the last 12 years, I'm certainly not a noob when it comes to audio. I do, however, apologize if I came across as disrespectful towards you though. I do see what you're saying about the foam tape, and yes, I would know what to do with it, but it just makes me uncomfortable to mount a head unit with no solid connection.

FWIW, this car will be getting this head unit, PPI 356cs components ran from a Cadence TXA-3004 bridged to the fronts, and a RF bd1000.1 powering (currently at least) 4 ED 11Ov2's ina sealed enclosure until I have time to build a proper ported enclosure for 3 of them.

i did take it that way, but of course this being the internet we are all experts in typing! LOL no harm no foul, thats why i offered my number.

i also suggested you take the glove box out. what i do is bolt the radio to a strap then from the glovebox area grab the strap and screw the SOB to the knee bolster bracket under the glovebox. your 960 maybe different i dont have much experience with them. this works on the 850's and x70 cars. this way the double stick tape is on the sides of the radio. i use tape to "hold" the radio in place, and the strap actual prevents the radio from coming out easily. this is mainly because these cars dont have a really good way of making it "lock" in place.
