Is My Factory Amp Dying?

I bought a used factory amp for my 850 and added it to my SC-816 radio in my 850. It has worked fine, but I have recently noticed the following issue:

Occasionally, I will notice the volume suddenly get much louder, even though I have not touched the volume dial. I think it has done the same thing in the opposite direction, but can't recall specifically. I'm wondering if the amp (or perhaps radio unit) is starting to go bad.

I have the ASC (active sound control) feature turned off, so that is not the problem. It also does this when listening to a CD or Ipod, so it's not a radio signal strength issue.

The amp is the 4x50 W factory amp (part number 6816302) and the factory harness is being used (part number 6816303).

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the factory amp? If the amp is dying, does anyone know of a fix? Perhaps a particular component is failing in the amp that is easily replaced with a little soldering?

And yes, I know that aftermarket amps are generally better, but for the purposes of this thread I'm only interested in advice about the factory equipment.

I just finished working on a car @ work that had an aftermarket problem with the same issue, the 4 channel amp would make it really loud and really quiet then kinda spike and then get quieter. We checked all the ground for the amp and the car, and for the battery shined it all up as it was a rusty pontiac but in the end it was the amp just being shotty and not working properly if you have access to another factory amp try that before buying or completely swapping. if it works with the newest amo then its your old one :)

Also if you have to buy an aftermarket amp in the end, all the speaker wiring from the old harness to the factory amp will still be there and you can tack into those speakers wire and amplify it from that location and keep in under the seat or wherever like you had.

Cheers. Kelsey

I'm pretty sure it's the amp as the problem does not occur when running off the head unit alone. I was just wondering if there were any internal components in these factory amps that commonly fail and could be easily replaced (capacitors, etc).

Sorry to sidetrack the thread but how do you turn the ASC off? That feature is super annoying, scares the shit outta me sometimes.

I believe you hold down the CD button until the ASC indicator turns off. It's in the owner's manual somewhere.

check the HU to amp cable for a bad connection, bent pin, pulled wire. if you have a multimeter use it to check the continuity of each wire and make sure one of them isn't flaky. Check socket on HU and amp as well.

It sounds like you have a bad connection or a short somewhere. Hopefully it's outside and not inside.

Any chance coffee/liquid has been spilled in the amp? gooey coffee residue does amazing things to electronics.
