do you guys polish with machine or hand though? i have tried polishing by hand and it doesn't work too well. i do always wax by hand though.

yeah you'll want to get a machine to do it right. I have a porter cable which is fine if you have all day to polish your car but this year I want to learn how to use a rotary polisher. time is precious.

Indeed. Machine is where it's at. There's a reason why detail shops use them. They work better and faster than by hand, no question. I wanted to get my paint back into decent shape, so I bought a used Dewalt orbital . I did lots of research, then bought everything I needed like foam pads, polish, wax, glaze, claybar etc and plunged into the job. Meguars seems to be pretty good stuff, easily available, not horribly expensive. Orbitals are slower than rotary, but it's near impossible to burn the paint, esp if you dial down the speed. The results were good for my first try. Check my sig for some shots of the car the day after I did all that. It doesn't suck too badly... B)

I used to be a die hard meguiars 3 step fan till I tried Nu Finish.

The problem is all the products that use Carnauba Wax do not last one rain underneath my oak trees.

Unfortunately I can't cut the trees, just had to find a car polish that would stand up to the abuse of the oak sap acid.

Carnauba Wax is a vegetable wax obtained from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree

it melts at 181 degrees F which is why they tell you not to apply in the sun.

Carnauba Wax is the hardest natural wax available and it's extremely durable.

Best of all it dries to a glossy finish.

Unfortunately after years of using and experimenting wasting time waxing buffing and polishing

the same wax up to 8 times in one summer I got the hint.

Carnauba Wax because of it's properties melts at a low temp then it get's sticky

and all the pollen an dust sticks to your freshly cleaned polished surface,

only to redo all the work you just put into your car for the weekend.

Buying more of the same Carnauba Wax polish ect.. And wasting more time.

That new Meguiar’s NXT Generation™ Tech Wax 2.0 I don't even know how to rate it.

I didn't like it, too sticky.

Nu Finish is the only Car wax polish that stands up to the rain under the trees,

I can apply in the sun, and the shine lasts about 1 month including water beading.

That's a crazy feat to beat.

I'm sold. It's wipe on and wipe off too. My PortaCable 7424 doesn't see that much car buffing.

Nu Finish's main polishing ingredient

Diethanolamine tall oil acid amide with Kaolin clay (calcined)

Stoddard solvent

and

Water

Nu Finish is the bomb. I use it once every few months

  • 3 weeks later...

I've used Nu Finish too and it's among the best, although I'd say the NXT is a bit easier to take off.

Funny though this topic came up.....I've waxed my cars myself for the past thirty years and swore I'd NEVER let anyone else touch them. Then a few months ago a friend of the family told me about his job at Delta Sonic and the detailing work they do. Well I brought it in and I watched them use the orbital polisher on it and was truly amazed. My 850 GLT is 13 years old now and I'm sure the machine took off film and road grime that the human hand just can't hit. What a deep down shine!! and it's still solid after a couple months.

Love to do things myself but sometimes it pays to break the mold and see what's out there. I do agree too that only a trained person should handle the machine.

I stick with Nufinish and Zymol as well. Usually I top the zymol with the nufinish. Holds longer and zymol just seems to look deeper on dark paints. Clay, Orbital polisher (zymol), hand apply and buff Nufinish. I also do agree that nufinish holds up to the severe/strange weather better than most.

Zymol.

i'm surprised know one is using any Mothers products...

I only use mother carnuba wax....i find its the best wax to bring any kind of shine to my yellow T5R (which is hard to get a nice shine to).

Curious to know what other yellow T5R owners are using

bananas JK im just jealous of some personan at lockheed with a minty Banana-R. Im a fan of caranuba as well i just take the time before hand to polish up and inbetween the 3-day waxing once a month i give it some "quick detailer" lovin but even that isnt really quick more like 3 hrs instead of 3 days detailer. Ive never been a fan of mothers and FYI NEVER NEVER use nano-technology-ology crap, im not sure if its because ive waxed with caranuba and "other mystery wax" for years and year or because its just weird. I accidentally grabbed nano-crap. my car had this sticky like quality and it even left my hands with stick. the next day i looked at my car and noticed it had a horrible fog all over it. im not dumb i spent about 3 hrs "quick detailing" with this but i was 1000% dis-satisfied. Either its just nano crap or its because ive used caranuba & "magic" for 2+ years. Ive done cars for dealerships and never had complaints but was i pissed when i saw the car after the nano-crap mistake. I only grabbed it cause my car needed love and they were outa the "quick" stuff i liked. needless to say i rewashed the car the next day and redid it with the caranuba quick detailer.

Shockingly nice product FYI is "eagle one quick detailer W/ caranuba" as long as you clean clean your car it leaves it glassy smooth for a very long time.

My car is washed and detailed weekly (500 miles a week, loving road work & along a river, hellooooo bugs)

My car is waxed monthly with "magic" and minus the fact it hasnt been made in 5 years I got a case B)

still curious if there is something special about Zymol "volvo" and plain old zymol
