Fake-R
I'd like to take out the center "support" bar from the front of my car, behind the grille. The one right under the hood release. I'm just wondering if anyone has done it, and if the structure held together without that bar in place. (Thanks to Zaitz for the picture)
Mesoam
yes i've seen a number of 850's with that piece removed, the header panel holds up fine
Fudge_Brownie
Pretty sure some high power swedes have done it, And I think there was a guy in Australia with a massive front mount that he stuck right about there.
volvo500bhp
Its not a problem it works for me and still has plenty of strength : Russ
Alan M
It does weaken the structure quite a bit in the 850 and make it fairly flimsy. 70 series plastics are more rigid in that area and fair better with the centre upright removed.
lookforjoe
I would agree that it will weaken the panel, especially if you're still using the stock hood safety catch. Russ - doesn't your car have side pins through the hood? If so, in your case, removing the center bar is a non-issue.

It does not weaken the panel that much the standard centre catch would work fine without it i only removed mine because the intercooler is pushed right forward, i like the Aerocatchs :)

I'm not sure what your looking at there. I'd say just the opposite looking at them side by side. The hood latches are at each side, attached to metal work, and the center latch only holds the secondary.
Kevin.
I might do this just to clean up the looks of my front end..... I'm liking how it looks. I'm just assuming that you would use a saw and cut that business out of there
Alan M
I'm only going by what I have seen as I thought about this mod myself as I have a very large frount mount but going by what cut 850 plastic I saw I decided not to.
bum2kev
its a non issue anyway. its very solid even when you remove it as the whole core rad,ic,ac bolts to the frame and the core support. also take the lower part out as it wont be doing aything other than blocking the ic. Falcone
+1 to hanks. I cut mine a long time ago, and I stand on it when I swap summer/winter hoods, and it doesn't flex. I've even jumped on it for fun.
lookforjoe
The thing is, it isn't going to make any difference to cooling (I've tried running w & w/o front bumper over the FMIC, and that made 0 difference to recorded temps), so I guess if you consider it as a purely cosmetic mod that reduces the front end safety structure in the event of an accident, then it's all good
bum2kev
that part has nothing really to do with crash safty. its fiber infused plastic. you could break it by kicking it.

That may be so, but every panel is designed to absorb impact, progressively, depending on severity of collision. Volvo doesn't arbitrarily add unnecessary material. Not that it really matters, if your car was hit over the bumper hard enough to push in the fenders/rails. etc., you'd probably scrap it anyway. :D
