940 Wagon Sputters And Conks Out

My 1994 Volvo 940 will occasionally (so far 4 times in 3 weeks)sputter and shut down while driving. When I try to restart it will turn over but shut down immediately. If left to cool off for an hour or so it will start and drive fine. I think the condition "might" be related to temperature. The problem seems to mostly occur when the outside temperature is 80 plus degrees although I haven't been able to completly confirm that. So far my mechanic has replaced a cracked vacuum hose but that hasn't helped. Since then he had it two times to look at but couldn't duplicate the problem so didn't do anything. Anyone have ideas??

You could go to the JY or eBay another ECU/computer. Its a start and if that's not it a spare ECU is not a bad thing.

The two most common failure points would be the ignition module, aka power stage, and the radio suppression relay.

The module is an high speed solid state relay used to switch the ignition coil on/off, has thermal grease compound which can degrade and lead to overheating. If looking for a used replacement, same part found on most 4 cylinder RWD 700/900s, and '89+ 240s.

The relay is a simple single pole single throw type with a proprietary connector. To repair, often you can just pop the cover off and reflow the soldier joints on the circuit board. Otherwise the same relay is found on most 700/900s, or you can simply cut off the harness connector and graft in a standard universal automotive relay+socket that you can buy almost anywhere.

I'd also check to see if there are any stored ODB1 codes:

My 740 had a bad Pick up coil ( hall effect sensor ) in the distributor.. Could be that if it has one or either your may have a crank sensor in the bell housing.. Fat Tiger has a very good idea on that also.. I replaced ECU, Power stage, ignition control module and all that.. and it was the distributor.. Mine is a 2.3L FT Turbo BTW . Now I have a buncha spare parts.. If ya wanna try a ECU , I have one P/N 0 280 000 544. Lemmie know if ya want it. It costed me 39 bucks plus shipping. But check everything else first.

+1 to the Ignition Relay. I had the same problem in my 1990 245DL and it turned out to be just that!!

The wierd thing on my 740 was when the hall effect in the distributor went out, it also caused the fuel pump(s) not to to come on. So I was scratchin' my azz big time ..
