Mysterious Ticking Sound + Oil Filler Question

Hi All,

I have two issues I'm hoping you can help me with... before I get started, I do want to mention that I have tried to search, and found many different posts about the oil pickup and hydraulic lifters. But I think my problems are quite different. :)

I just bought my car off another member here, and I've been having some issues.

(1) My engine has two oil filler caps, please see attached picture "engine.jpg". I've looked at over 30 pictures of the T5 motor, and none of them have this. What is this for? I haven't opened it because I was afraid I might break something...

(2) I have a on and off ticking sound that gets faster as the engine RPM increases. But its on and off, its never there all the time, and it seems to come from the timing belt side of the motor. I have uploaded a video on youtube to show this problem. At the start to near the end, the ticking is present, but toward the end the sound goes away.

One thing I want to mention is that the timing belt + water pump was replaced recently, and the sound seems to be coming from near there... if I open up the hood you can't really hear the sound, but if you close it and go toward the passenger side of the car it is present.

Here is the link for the video:

Please help :)

just double ports nothing special

have you checked the oil level or even change it latley ?

Don't let him fool you, his "nothing special" can be pretty unique :P

Someone likely followed the post on here where someone  did that. If it's not leaking it's no problem. And you can add oil twice as fast!

As for the ticking...my serp belt tensioner has bearings that are on the way out and it ticks pretty noticeably sometimes. You check to see if thats the source? I plan on replacing it because it's annoying.

If the timing belt was replaced recently...was the belt tensioner replaced as well??

Hi Slapshot,

I'm not sure if the tensioners were replaced, I will find out from the previous owner. Since the sound is on and off, can I conclude the motor is OK? It sounds like it is coming from the timing belt tensioner area....

Thanks!

Well when i bought my my car used the timing belt had been replaced but the shop neglected to replace the mechanical tensioner (at 110k)..they literally just checked it off on the inspection list. At the time i didnt even notice. Fast forward a year and 13k, the timing belt tensioner falls apart due to failed bearings and boom the head is shot. I swapped in another engine after that but you honesty dont want to go through that.

Remove the one bolt holding the timing belt cover and inspect the tensioner and idler pulley. If they are newish both should have little to no wear (basically look new).

TL;DR: Honestly, if it were me i would check to make sure that the tensioner and idler pulley were replaced along with the belt and water pump.

If the serp belt tensioner goes you lose your accessories...if the timing belt goes you lose your motor.

EDIT: I just saw what car you bought. Looks very well taken care of and honestly its probably just the serp belt tensioner. Get a 1/2 to 3/4 drive adapter, the volvo tool, or put pennies on either side of a 3/8 ratchet and unload the tensioner a bit and spin the pulley by hand. If it rattles thats your problem.
