theunderlord
Any reliable online retailers? Also, what's wrong with using a regular T40 bit on a 6" extension?←nothing at all. good luck finding a 7" long T40 bit. haha..
tallahasseegreys
From the Bay13 maintenance section...."Notice in the picture a 7 inch long 40 torx bit is in position on the back 40mm torx screw. The 40mm torx bit makes getting the back screw out without destroying the torx fitting on top of the screw. Get one and use it or your problems will make you wish you did. (3/8 drive)"Is it that a regular T40 bit is too large to fit down there or something?

Phaedrus
Both Snap-on and Mac tools have them. I have an approx. 6" long set of T handle Torx bits from MSC. They work rather well for the task as well...~JD

tallahasseegreys
The only online places mentioned on this thread so far that actually had a 3/8" drive extra long (7 to 8 inches) torx 40 bit were snapon and www.toolsource.com.Snap on wants $26.50 for theirs - which comes to over $39 after shipping - yikes, and toolsource wants $14.96. So I ordered one from toolsource, but they unfortunately require a $25 minimum order. So I picked up a 7mm hex bit for when I get the nerve to to a brake job and a stubby screwdriver set. Total for these items after shipping was 33.24.Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

850 Stylzz
If you have an Autozone near you, they sell a set of "OEM" (brand name) torx keys. You get like 8 for 15 bucks. Mind you, these arent bits, but rather like big allen keys. but it sure did the trick for my thermostat. I use the rest of the set all the time too.caveat though, I broke the plastic handle that is supposed to allow you to apply more torque on the bit. If you brake it too, better have some darn good hand strength or a good pair of vice grips to finish the job.
