Need More Mpg And Power With My V-90

I'm only getting around 18 in town and 22 or so on the road which is dead on what the sticker said I should get. So far I have blocked the flap to the cold air side in the airbox, dropped in a fresh set of Volvo plugs and just went over her to get it to stock tune. She runs great but just is too thirsty.

I'm looking to pick up at the least around 5 MPG and a little power how about some suggestions guys.

I get great fuel mileage with both our 95 964 and our 98 S90. Things that seem to work for best mpg :

- no idling

- properly inflated, stock sized, highway tread tires

- 65 mph

- synthetic oil

- don't carry around useless weight in the truunk

That's what seems to work for me.

I only idle at a red light between changes normally.

Tires are a set of 205x55x16 Pirelli P5's on a set of super light Voxx 16x7's and are inflated to 40 LBS.

I normally drive with the cruse set at 70 MPH on the Interstate

I'm running Mobile 1 5W-30

I don't carry anything in the back unless I'm going to a gig (I'm a guitarist)and even then it's normally less than 150 LBS total

I still can not pull 20 MPG out of my V-90 in town and above 22 on the road so ???

Take all of the passenger seats out, install a less restrictive exhaust, lose the carpet and door panels. Otherwise the only other suggestions I can think of would cost more (potentially a lot more) than you would save in fuel costs over the life span of the car.

Best thing to do is to vote people into office that understand that cheap energy is a good thing; and then buy a small car like a mini cooper with a manual trans., fun to drive and gets remarkable fuel economy.

As for more power: my '94 944T with some simple mods gets 18/22 and I have significantly more power than any stock 960. Might consider converting over to a 4 cylinder turbo with a few minor mods.

First the exhaust is one of the mods I have considered along with looking at some of the chips.

Second I founded the Alabama Chapter of The United States Constitution Party and am involved in 3 US Congressional campaigns the Gov race, Lt Gov race and several sate senate races as a consultant + organizing one of the local Tea Party events you have no idea how busy at what you suggest I am!!

Thirdly I also have a 740 intercooled turbo wagon so--.

Oh and I'm looking hard at a 6 speed C-30.

How many miles are on your V90? O2 sensors start getting lazy after about 100K miles and that will negatively affect your mpg. Check every single vacuum hose you can find, especially those little molded, rubber elbows for holes on the inside of the radius in the engine compartment. Clean your MAF with MAF cleaner or electronics cleaner. Do not touch it with anything other than the cleaner. You should be doing better than 22 on the highway the way your driving. Last week I get 29 mpg with our 98 S90 but that is at high altitude (above 5,000 ft.) and at a constant 65 mph for a couple hundred miles.

Are you running Premium Unleaded fuel?

148K on the miles.

I'm running mid grade. I tried a couple of tanks of Premium but saw no increase so I went back to the mid grade. I just did a head gasket and had a slight leak between 3 and 4. I have not run Premium since and will try the Premium for the next couple of tanks.

Looked hard at all the hoses when we did the head.

I will look into the O2 sensor.

Checked the millage after running a tank of 93 octane ( ran it almost dry and pumped 20 gallons). MPG went up only .2 price is $.13 a gallon higher than the 89 octane and I saw no performance increase I could tell. Still lousy MPG and with the projected soon to be $6 a gallon gas prices this summer ---.

perhaps a little sea foam action? clear up some crud in there? and with the 02 sensors you can hit them with parts cleaner too or even soak them in gas. MAF, 02, & maybe seafoam might squeek out a little more power and MPG. you dont idle rough? or smoke? or anything? even check your plugs out, dirty plugs? shiney clean plugs? or just not gapped right plugs.

dirty plugs = dirty plugs haha

clean plugs = possible coolant issues still

mis gapped plugs = misgapped plugs haha

i think if you just gave it a nice tune up it could help out

definatly would rock the seafoam at that miles especially if you never done it before

oh also pull the hose off your throttle body and spray a little carb cleaner on a brush clean the black sut off and then wipe it down with a clean towel. do this to the plate and the TB itself. make sure your throttle cable is nice an snug too

On the plugs Volvo triple electrodes and fresh. Nice honey brown across the board.

What the heck is Sea foam action??

Slight rough idle at times ,no smoke.

sea foam is to help break up crud in the top of your engine. you can suck it in through the intake SLOWLY and then after about 1/3 of the can you can shut off your car. let it sit for 10 min, make a sandwhich, eat the said sandwhich, go out and start your car, youll smoke like woodstock for a couple minutes. take it for a drive, dont womp on it but give it some pedal love. All the smoke is crap that the sea foam broke up and is now burning off. People have seen better compression numbers after sea foam, as well as smoother idle, better mpg, and also laughter of people thinking your car is on fire. I wouldnt recomend doing this in a residential neighborhood because when i say it smokes trust me it smokes. Its not the answer to your prayers but it has helped people out before and im a fan of it. i run it about every 10k miles just to make sure im funky fresh

youtube SeaFoam just for some examples but also im sure there are videos for volvos and their sea foam adventures

not to thread jack, but do you really notice a difference after you do the sea foam? I heard it can fug the plugs too in the process...

I've been debating myself about doing it and haven't out of being nervous of hurting something on my 244, and just like the guy who started this thread I too am just getting the dead on EPA sticker of 18 and 22-24 for my '93 244....

I may have found the culprit. She got suddenly sluggish at low RPM and had a rough idle at times so I started looking around under the hood. I found a tear in the intake hose between the MAF sensor and throttle body at the PVC hook up.We shall see how much difference it makes when the new part gets here.
