What is the life of the RMS.

I had mine changed @ 60K miles that was 8 years ago. I'm at 209K now

I'm assuming that it should be done again. That is if it's leaking.

Not really something that goes bad at a certain mileage. It really depends on how well you maintained the car, especially with regard to the crankcase vent system. Eventually they will start leaking just because they are made of rubber and what-not. But the general rule for a RMS is don't replace it until you have to (i.e. its leaking).

my understanding is they fail from excessive pressure, as said already, not time. I replaced my clutch at 155k, not leak from the RMS but I changed it anyway.

and you would know if it is leaking!

I would say that they are a wear item and being as they are exposed to constant heat, abrasion by the crank and automotive fluids, they are going to require replacement at some point and as I said before- If you are in there anyway it is wise to replace that $12 part. I am not suggesting that anyone change them at a certain mileage or age, only when they fail badly or you have easy access because you are in there for another reason.

I'm using my leaky RMS as an excuse to do a manual swap :lol: . But yea, wait until it leaks before you go pulling the engine/transmission out, unless you are going to anyways for something else.

Oh I certainly agree, I was curious if there was a specific time frame of the seal.

My RMS leaked at 10y/90K miles mark.

- Car well maintained

- CCV was not blocked.

This happened in 2008 and all is good now after RMS was replaced

I guess I should mention that mine never leaked over the 280,000 miles it was in the car...It is on a stand now waiting for rods etc...and still not leaking. Before I put my temporary motor in the car I changed the not leaking after 153,000 miles RMS and it is still not leaking and I will change the original one in my built motor before I swap my original motor back in the car.:lol:

lol you know you're a hardcore enthusiast when you put a temporary motor in a car just to rebuild the original!!

Needz ringz on the original so it was not just for the rebuild I took it out, but I wanted to do so much more and not have the car off the road for that long. Good thing this is a hobby :lol: cause I still only have the damn thing OTR one day a week for all the piddling I do on it.

Back on topic 280k out of a seal is very good if you ask me but I got this car new and I know it has been taken care of and for the first 200k or so driven gingerly by my wife.

I agree Lee, we need a good tranny drop write-up!
