I've run into what I think is a strange clutch/flywheel/transmission combination while swapping a new engine into my 98T5M. I'm wondering if people have suggestions but mainly want to give people a head up that there are some weird combinations out there.

The chassis number for my car is 414576. FCP and a bunch of other vendors list 460000 as the cutoff number for switching from a single mass flywheel and external slave cylinder to a dual mass flywheel and internal cylinder. Since my car's chassis # is below 460000 I ordered the 850R clutch kit for a single mass flywheel from DW (P/N 272237). Unfortunately, it doesn't fit.

When I got the tranny off tonight I found the newer style dual mass flywheel.

But I still have the older style external slave cylinder...

So FYI for people with 98s: the chassis number guidelines for picking the right clutch may not always be accurate, and an external slave cylinder may not always indicate that you have a single mass flywheel. I suppose it's possible that this car was converted from a single mass setup (I bought it with 109k), but a new flywheel's not cheap so it's hard to understand why someone would go through the trouble. So should I sell my brand new R clutch or start looking for a single mass flywheel?
