boxpin
So I went to the wrecker today and found a 93 N/A. Hmmmm, I thought, there are some cams sitting in that engine that would go very nicely in my car. So after removing 30 billion 10mm bolts I walked out(paid) with some N/A cams. I get home and place them next to the Turbo cams I had from my previous engine and I for the life of me cannot tell the difference. I am looking for some sort of lobe difference and I just cant see it. Two options come to mind 1. The cams I pulled from my last engine were N/A cams already and now I have two sets 2. I just wasted a bunch of money. 3. Both 1 and 2. Is there a way to tell, part numbers, mic, something.
S8ET6
IMO, it looks like they both have similar lift #s, but from the shape of the lobe, the cam on the right (in the last pic) appears to have more duration.
98t5M
AFAIK the difference is like .5mm in lift across all the lobes. Probably pretty hard to spot without a caliper.
Jaxx
dude you're eyeballing cam lobes? use calipers. boxpin
I used a caliper this morning and there was about a .44mm difference in the lift.
mdlimy
Whats the Spec for NA cams and does anyone know what the 93 NA cam Specs are? GLT is NA, we are speaking in terms of pre 97 850s.
boxpin
Should I put these in or is there a special N/A cam I should be looking for?
dublin14
GLT is NA, we are speaking in terms of pre 97 850s. Ok, whats the difference between 93 NA cams compared to 94-97 NA cams?
Falcone
the cam gears should be a little thinner on the 93 cams (use a thinner t-belt)
the commissar!
Ok, whats the difference between 93 NA cams compared to 94-97 NA cams? As far as lift and duration... 93 > other NA > T5 Turbo Not sure where a GLT Turbo fits in with that. I read here on VS that you replace the gears with the ones that came on your car so the thinner gears should not make a difference.
L8 APEKS
There are 2 easy ways to tell the difference. 1), mic the lobes from base to tip. The taller lobe is the N/A cam. I think it was a difference of about 2mm IIRC. 2), look at the part numbers on the end of the cams. The part numbers also have INT and EXH on them (or some just have an I and E at the end of the number). The cam gears on my '94 turbo are identical to the cam gears on the '93 N/A. FWIW, I am very happy with the N/A cams now that I sorted out my other issues!
dublin14
In a nut shell any NA 93-98 cams will work for a 98 T5 engine?
