Butcher Job On Friends Sc81X Into Aftermarket

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine has a 1998 S70 N/A and decided to "upgrade" the stereo to some sony xplode. Regardless their father butchered it then after that was a fail their friend butchered it again. I finally got a call to see what i can do and i have 99% of it figured out. After calling a friend in car audio then looking in bay 13 i managed to get all 6 speakers working (might be 8 but i cant tell if theres door speakers and i dont wanna take her door panels off etc. plus all the wires are hooked up speaker wise) I did the best i could in the short amount of time i had but there was 4 wires still not connected. The factory harness was cut & removed long ago & now long gone so i was working off bay 19 & audio help from a friend over the phone. I couldnt even tell you what stock unit she had but i would assume it was a SC-816 as i have a 1998 S70 myself (T5m though but with SC-816

So I only tried the stereo with the key in the on position and it worked great all speakers bumping sounded great, minus the fact that every time you remove the key and then put it back an put it on the II setting the CD player would have to manually be turned on and always start at 0.

Also, i found out after i left that the CD player doesnt work when the car is running. And then again later in the night that her inteior lights dont work for the gauges, the CD player, & possible the ACC unit.

My question is if anyone at all knows how to wire a sony adaptor to the factory system while still somehow utilizing all the functions (dimmer lights, key in I, key in II, car running.

Off the top of my head there are 2 Green wires with brown stripes that are tapped off, possibly a pink wire, and maybe one other. I am having the hardest time to get this thing worked out because A i have no factory harness to refer to, i have no volt meter to work with, and i dont know if the lights ever worked or the ACC because she just came home from college and had 2 people butcher it in the whole day she was home.

I dont know much about electronics but i thought i did well seeing as i had nothing to work with and got the speakers running. All i need to figure out is what wires to hook up that are left & where, plus i need to figure out the dimming lights that dont even light, plus possibly the climate control.

As for the 2 black wires from possibly the 14 pin unit (i can only estimate because they are from the left side) are twisted together as they were "grounds" The green with brown striped wires are tapped off, the pink wire, & possible a red with white stripe wire.

If anyone at all has rewired a sony system into their SC-81x unit i would LOVE your assistance.

Her father is a mechanic and hates the fact i can work on volvos and regardless if he funked this up or not i will be the one to blame. :(

Ok theres 2 parts to the fun here:

First is the Sony harness:

If your friend still has the manual that came with the Sony HU, it should have an explanation of the wiring harness inside. All aftermarket HU's use the same color coding for their harness, so if you know one, you know the others.

Red is power, black is ground, yellow is ACC/ignition power, blue is antenna power, orange with white is interior lights, blue with white stripe is remote amp turn on (not used in your case)

Left front speaker is white (+) white with black (-)

Right front speaker is grey (+) grey with black (-)

Left rear is green (+) green with black(-)

right rear is purple (+) purple with black (-)

Next is the OEM harness:

You should be able to find the OEM wiring diagram somewhere in Bay 13 (I don't have my diagrams on my laptop, they're at home mad.gif)

Good luck saving your rep with the dad biggrin.gif

the reputation with the dad is blown already haha hes not thrilled in any way and was nice enough to spin this on me. shockingly i can live with it seeing as hes a mechanic and im fixing his & a friends hack job. He not a huge fan cause hes had 3 volvos and my 1 is perfectly fine and i do most my own work yet hes the mechanic

I have the ECC and everything figured out but im still having issues with the power.

According to the diagram yellow is power and black is ground. thats it. When i start the car it plays, when your foot is on the brakes it plays, when your actually in motion, it loses power, also its a fan of blowing fuses. The fun part is there are 2 green with brown stripe wires (i got zapped :) ) and a yellow with purple. and theres only 1 power line to the CD player.

When i said this thing was butchered it was butchered. I feel i did pretty good seeing as when it actually plays it sounds fantastic now. All i gotta do now is find out how to get the damn thing to stay on. Also, when the ECC would hooked up and so was the green w/ brown stripe the climate control lights were always on with or without the key in the ignition. At this point her father blamed me so now one is allowed to touch the car cept for certified mechanics. My buddy is a car stereo installer (not the generic ones like a real car installer) hes gunna snag the car while hes workin an get it hooked up properly.

Lets just say i was more than thrilled to bump my tunes as i rolled out in my not funked up volvo :)

Damn. That does sound like a hack job! In you opposition, does it beat this?

Yes, that is a black B+ line, connected together by throwing a rusty bolt though a wad of ring connectors. That was how my friend decided to install his "after-market" setup. (2x wal-mart subwoofers, an older Elemental Designs subwoofer, 3 wal-mart amps, all wal-mart speakers, and 2 (yes, TWO) head units. Needless to say, as he drove, his antenna would go up and down randomly, even with the stereo off. The best part of that setup was BY FAR the ED sub. (Which was pretty bad, since my brother decimated it by playing it hard, the cone separated from the driver (he ran it with a JL 250/1 amp, which had an RMS rating of the sub's peak [at least he never clipped the amp!laugh.gif), I then glued the cone back to the driver with superglue cool.gif (I used the sub once for some random project, and it did what it needed to do. [not a speaker, lol.]), and gave it to my friend. Since this pic, he's removed this disaster (I think? TyConn_S70, if you see this, please tell me he did...) and did it the correct way. (again, I hope he did....) I still think he has two HU's, which I think when he's on vacation this summer, I'm going to fix this for him. (Not a bad 18th B-Day gift, 'eh? [TyConn, lemme know if you want in on this. I'm sure his parents wouldn't mind us helping!])

"...opposition"? Really? NO. Maybe "opinion"! lol. I can't speal [sic].

Damn, thats seriously fucked up blink.gif Clearly, the dudes before you have never installed a stereo before (rule #1=never cut stock harness) Let us know if everything works out biggrin.gif

Sorry to break it to you, but no, it's NOT a joke. I'll see if he has pics of it. I can't understand the reasoning behind this, especially considering who he is (He's 17, has is bachelor's in computer science, and is currently going for his Ph.D at Brown) I don't think we'll ever know his reasoning, but I sure know I'm calling his parents and seeing if I can get access to his car while he's on summer vacation (out of the state IIRC.)

oh i gave up. not becasue i wanted to but because i was sick of getting bitched at for something that i never did. i was trying to help but after 2 days of her bitching i said monkey it have fun. I gave her the # of my friend who installs stuff professionally and for all i know she called him but in all honesty i was being nice trying to patch up problems, dont be a oh yeah! to me and thats why i left her with the ability to think about her self while shes driving. I get to rock out while i drive

oh and P.S. thank you for your help i really did get it sounding good with all speakers working and clear as a bell. The power issue was outa my control seeing as i didnt have a volt meter (although i found out what ones were power by shock instead on accident) some day she will grow up but until then she can look at my volvo for her inspiration B)

she did ask the all time favorite question on here though, "how do i make my car faster" (shes got a N/A) i smurked and said get your 850 turbo back

Thats CS for you lol...

They can do algorithms, but give them something other then a keyboard they sh*t their pants hahaha

I can come up with a reasoning for 2 HU's , though i would never do it since their is much better ways.

In our case, we have 8 speakers.

Run 1 headunit for the front/rear, 1 headunit for the front/rear, or do all front, all rear

You can now have speakers with a lower impedance and be ok...

TO do this properly of course you'd need two identical HU's and an AUX source so that the lag is synchronized. Radio would probably never work.

still a really really stupid idea, but, he could work it so that the front was the only one on and the second was for the rear? or if it was an SUV?

idk how to rationalize it other then your too stupid to go out and buy a standalone amplifier and had never heard of fader

I think his reasoning was that one had a dead CD player, and the other had a bad radio tuner. (One came with the car, and the other was one he had as a spare for his boat.) Oh, he's not just doing CS. He's doing neuro-electric engineering at Brown. (He's working as a researcher there, too.).

And it's far from an SUV. Try more like a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. (With a leaky roof!laugh.gif)

He's doing neuro engineering at Brown, with a CS degree.

100$ says they use him for all the programming, that's about it.

CS as a worthwhile major is a joke unless you go grad+. Pretty useless major otherwise.

Given by the fact i did radios at age 15-16 and i did a better job then that. Go ask him to make some algorithms to solve how to install a radio :D

And if that was his plan, it sucked. He coulda taken one apart and built his own AUX input and had a friggin standalone cd player or tapedeck. Hell even FM transmitter woulda been a better idea then that lol...

Lets just say when you do CE, which YOU probably will from what i've seen you post, you'll understand why CS is a silly ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD major, and the students of it are pretty damn silly too. They tend to not bathe, have terrible humor, don't leave their rooms, and drive crappy civics. But they can friggin make crazy algorithms and be mad programmers and all that jazz..

/end rant

I regret attempting to justify it hah...

oh and to the OP

grab yourself a 9v or build a 3v battery pack, if your good at telling phase you'll find all your speakers and get them in phase at the same time. Put it to the 2 wires, and go.

Even if the factory harness was cut, the wires are probably all still there...trace it back.

You'd be surprised what you find that people just tape off in bundles...

It sounds like they didn't pull the 12v from the proper location...there's always 12v running to the radio, hence how it keeps it's memory. The ignition is what turns it on and off obviously. My moronic friend wired his subs up, couldnt figure out how the hell his radio was still on in the car with the key out. 'remote' wire was spliced outta the ignition wire to the HU and he had the 12v from his subwoofer amp touching the remote wire. Needless to say that was a piss poor setup.

Glad to see you got most of it figured out, in person its alot easier to go through then over the net to help in these situations imho.

ok, I screwed up. His actual major (from his CV on his site) is "B.S. in Computer Engineering."

And he's designing a microprocessor for a implantable chip. (Custom Architecture and all.)

And don't hate on CS majors' cars. I'm a CS Major and I drive an S70. (Same with TyConn_S70 and a whole sleuth of others here on VS.) And CS for me is defined as network technology engineering. (AKA designing large-scale voice/data networks.) I want to move more towards Pen Testing though, since I'm far more of a fan in computer and network security, along with real-life applications of security systems. (Both virtual and physical.) So I'd pretty much get paid by company owners to hack into and/or break into their networks and/or buildings and show them their weaknesses and fix the weaknesses.
