Another Optima Battery Thread...

Bah

Recommended Posts

First off this is for 1996 850R

So i have searched on optima's on here...most of the info is from pre-2008 for some reason.

I'm mainly looking for a redtop, since i do have subs etc...but 600wRMS amp != yellowtop need. Plus, if i can get away with the redtop fitting in with no mods to the battery cables which has been done before, it makes life easy.

SO in the past the 75/35 was the recommend red top that would fit but you kinda had to to tug the cables but it'd fit nice and snug.

Well it seems optima doesn't make those anymore, which is a bummer....they sell online but im not paying shipping on a battery, and auto parts stores don't have the 75/35s anymore.

So what do i get?

I'm looking to NOT modify the battery cables *yet*. In the future i'll do yellow top and redo all the main grounds etc...but for now i just want a nice long lasting battery, instead of the POS 500 CCA they try to pawn on you around here.

I've looked at the 34R...any thoughts on that fitment? Looks like it'd do pretty good, but does it fit in the 850 Tray, and do the stock cables fit onto it?

If you have a redtop or yellowtop in your car, can you post what the model # is and what you had to do to get it to fit?

Sorry for posting this in a rush, but hopefully when i get home tonight i can get some good views. And yes i know this is talked to death, but search Optima threads, you'll only find 21 of them surprisingly, and nothing recent. Every thread says to get a 75/35....but go on Optimas website..they don't even list it anymore!

Thanks guys...i'm hoping the 34R is the new 75/35...but i'll let you guys tell me.

Well turns out optima is sh*t now. Johnson controls owns them, and they are mass produced, very little quality control

Whatcha think? 35 of that model look like it'd fit? you just put it in the car backwards so the poles matchup yea?

189$..but a redtop/yellowtop is going to cost just as much, and be worth just as less :(

Diehard Platinums....poorman's odyssey battery =p Just dunno if the P-5 is the right one to look at...

Open to opinions on it.

I maybe a exception, but my 98 S70 has a Optima RedTop 75/25. I wanted the posts and screw terminals for adding accessories. It works well, but thats because I also changed the positive battery cable with a new upgraded factory one. I routed it per Volvo's TSBs and had some extra slack, so the cables were no issue for me. It also seems it holds in the battery holder with no issues.

My local Kragen (O Rielly's) had these in stock and bought it from them, mainly because I heard horrible warranty and return issues from buying online (Amazon.com).

I'd have to agree that the performance of the Optima's now have degraded as you have stated with being bought out.

I bought a 78/34 Red Top show model slightly larger than the 75/35 really cheap at Autozone before they where discontinued.

So far it's been going strong now for 4 years.

I did have to modify the battery tray for it to stay put, including modifying the terminals.

The bottom plastic lip is so short that the stock clip had nothing to grab on to.

I plastic welded a nut so a long screw would attach through one of the spacer holes in the bottom of the battery.

It's rock solid.

Those Diehards... look appealing, I was thinking of getting one for my wife's car but I couldn't justify $189. So she got the regular Diehard for 102.

  • 3 weeks later...

I did a Optima 800 red top in mine and works awsome. I have custom platinum terminals and they work great. I have had no issues at all with my set up. I had to use a distrubution block for power and worked great. I have pixs but dont know how to post them it looks awsome. The factory set up is so ugly.

by the way my set up is in a 97 850r wagon w/ ipd cold air
