2000 V70R Engine Code

Recently bought a 2000 V70R (canadian car) with 200,000km. it always had a check engine light in, but my mechanic gave the go ahead since he just thought the light was an oxygen sensor issue. since owned, put in a rebuilt angle gear, had volvo deal perform engine and transmission program updates, and now have done both O2 sensors. I still have the CEL on. everytime the car comes back to me the CEL is not on the dash, but it reappears shortly after driving, after updates it was 250km, after angle gear and front O2, it came back after 85km, just did the rear 02 sensor, and it too over 400km(250miles) but sure enough the CEL is back. my Volvo mechanic tells me it gives a Code # 422. can anyone help me out

Erik

P0442 is evap system leak. It won't affect your car's driveability. Buy a new OEM (not aftermarket) gas cap and hopefully that will take care of it. If not then a smoke test or a good inspection of the lines.

Ill get a new cap tommorow, any other potentally quick remidies?, what lines exactly? i'm used to the 700/900 series cars so info is needed

save your money on the gas cap, the OP said 0422 not 0442.

use a o2 spacer trick like shown here: http://www.energeticforum.com/renewable-energy/1387-o2-sensor-modification-using-spark-plug-non-foulers.html

you want to do this on the rear o2 sensor, apparently the cat is toast. if the cat was functioning properly, the ECU should see much lower o2 readings from the exhaust gases at the rear o2 sensor than the front o2 sensor(the o2 sensor sends voltage readings back to the ecu). the readings from the rear should also be fairly steady compared to the front which should be fluctuating rapidly. by placing the rear sensor further away from the exhaust stream, the rear sensor will report lower o2 readings back to the ECU. if the readings are sufficiently low enough, the error code won't be triggered.

there's also of course a chance that you have other issues on the car such as cracked exhaust manifold or a torn vac hose, anything that would cause an inaccurate o2 sensor reading.

Hello all,

Recently had the same code (ECM-4801/P0422) pop up in the Wife's 2000 XC after an extended idle in a drive-through. I know it COULD be intake leaks, exhaust leaks, bad O2's, etc. Just curious to see if anyone knows the most common fix for this. Monitored the O2's last night for 10-15 minutes @ idle and didn't see anything unusual. Searching yielded no real results, as most don't post back once the car is fixed. Anyway, just curious :)...
