My thoughts on the 02 issues I had was due to the SAS. If you look at the 4.3 turbo DPs the sensors are placed differently then on the 97 GLT. I "think" what was happening was since there was no SAS being used with the 4.3 ECU it reads the O2 differently and/or the values are different thus causing the CEL. I never tried the 98 t5 4.4 ecu afraid that it would toast the A/C.

Appreciate all the info i'm getting, but let me back up to the origional dilema and let me know what i should do.'97 glt, broken timing belt, having difficulty finding same motor,so was able to locate '98 B5234t3.Was told it would go right in,with no other mods and get performance increase. Then told would need to change ecu or would get performance decrease. The B5234T3 has the turbo with it.THANKS,i'm trusting all your knowledge, since i'm new to this breed.

I would assume you would still see an increase with the engine swap since the turbo is bigger even with the LPT ecu. Since you have the angle on the motor I would suggest talking to IPD about tuning that ECU for the new motor. Maybe they can map the stock t5 4.4 tune your 97 LPT ECU?

So that means you all you need besides the motor/turbo is either a 97 T5 or R specced ecu (tuned or otherwise). Pretty sure someone can find one for you on here. I bet the motor comes with a fuel rail and injectors as well.

How do you know about the ECU? Have you done this in the past?

No I haven't done this in the past, but if the existing ECU is Motronic 4.4...as per this chart, I'm pretty sure you could have an outfit like ipd flash a map for the T5/R. I think the R would be closer to a 98 T5's standard power output.

I didnt mean to imply running a M4.3 ecu in the car...no experience there. If the OP is a technical person they might consider giving it a shot and tracking down what signals need to be altered to account for O2 differences etc...

The motor will most likely run on the old ECU but considering injectors, displacement and turbo characteristics are different I would be hesitant on saying how well it would run.
