Where Do I Find This Tool?

Recommended Posts

Part number 999 5467.

It's the shock retaining nut, the one that looks like a + sign.

I wanted to get my extra strut assembly down to the strut body, but it doesn't seem like that will happen today.

I've tried to get the thing off with a set of vice grips, but that didn't work at all.

I searched, but I could have missed something..

Where can I get one, aside from the dealer, unless it's relatively cheap?

Thanks,

John

That seems like it could/should be way cheaper, but it looks like a nice, professional tool

I got the retaining nut off using a set of vice grips and a set of channel lock pliers like Tightmopedman9 said.

Once the flange lock nut and that odd washer is off, take a set of vice grips and lock them onto either the nut itself, or the tip of the strut (there should be a bit of un-threaded metal where you can safely lock the vice grips).

Twist the nut towards you, and the strut away from you.

If you have a buddy to hold the strut while you do this, I would strongly recommend this.

Or if you have a pretty nicely sized table vice, that would work also.

Thanks for the suggestion Tightmopedman9 and yangotang.

Wasn't there a socket a available for this x nut? How would you use channel locks for this nut?

Yea, I'm not sure about a socket being available because it is such an odd shape, almost resembling a + sign.

You put the channel locks on either the tip of the strut, the part without any threading, or you set the locks open far enough to get a grip around each side.

It's pretty easy to see what I'm talking about once you get that far, but I didn't take any pictures :(

use pipe wrench + some pblaster

Pipe wrench

Yea, PB blaster was a' flowin.

Although, I don't have a big enough pipe wrench, so that was kind of out of the question.

20mm socket with two slots cut in it ...

or I use a hammer also

Yea, I beat the snatch out of it with a hammer.

But do you have any pictures of that socket you said?

My tool., socket with notches cut. Took longer to fabricate the socket than it did to take the nut off.

Dremel with a cut off wheel and a spare socket, I heated it and dropped it in oil so it wouldn't rust.

nice work Modus!

I have always just uncompressed the spring just enough to get some tension back on the seat, tap the nut loose with a punch, re-compress the spring and voila spin it off
