Some Mechanics Are Hilarious

Recommended Posts

Ben already knows this story and hopefully he has come up with a good phone call to these guys but anyway, the story first:

As some of you know, my '98 wagon is out in Arizona at my parents' place since I live in Sweden. I'm coming back to the States for the summer (probably longer) and will at some point have to go get my car and drive it back East.

Before driving x-country I'm hoping to get the pair of manual AWD axles installed into the wagon to replace the automatic ones since 1 of them has a torn boot and it's a good chance to do both. Although I'm a lot more comfortable working on the car now, I don't like working on major stuff alone so I called up The RevolveStore in Tucson to see how much they would charge to swap 2 axles and I thought I would ask how much to install a set of front TME lowering springs as well.

The guy who answered the phone (Mike) was friendly and put Andy (a Volvo tech) on the phone. I think it's safe to say that Andy was an asshole. He asked me what kind of car it was and I said, a '98 V70 AWD manual to which he responded, "no such car exists and I've been doing this for 25 years and have never seen one." I explained that it's a bit of a unique car and that I put in an M58 (as the car came out of the factory for all non-US markets) and it has the Öhlins suspension thinking he would appreciate this.

Instead, his response was to say that he hates working on cars like that and he's busy enough without having to deal with ridiculous stuff that probably won't fit and that he's installed IPD crap before and it's just not worth it to him. I nicely tried to explain that these springs are made for the car and that they would fit on any FWD Volvo. He then lectured me about lowering an AWD car and that it would ruin my angle gear. I almost laughed.

Then I said all I really wanted was to have the axles installed and assured him that they are Genuine Volvo axles. He refused saying that they probably won't fit and he doesn't want to waste his time on stuff like that. Once again I tried to explain that my car has a manual AWD transmission and that these are the axles that come with that car but he was stubborn and said he wouldn't work on my car. I wished him luck in life and hung up.

So does anybody know anything about The RevolveStore in Tucson, AZ? They only do Volvos but man was this guy a prick to me on the phone.

That's how the shop in Durango is. First time I took my car to him he took a look at the engine and said "I don't work on modified cars". I was like oh well I guess then I'll just give somebody else my money. I've tried calling him for various parts (since we don't have a dealership) and other misc. questions and he always blows me off. I think it's a somewhat typical volvo tech thing to do.

Surprised you kept pressing the issue. I wouldn't want him anywhere near anything I owned.

Local Volvo indie carries a strong reputation and seemed nice. But he wanted $85 for a used SAS exhuast valve.

One local mechanic told me he "doesn't work on those foreign cars"

Proud to say, that despite all the troubles I've had, and the time wasted, hell even the back problem I suffer from on a daily basis, thanks to all of you, my car has never been worked on by any mechanic for anything more than an alignment. Coming up on 50,000 miles by me, still running strong. It does have a long to-do list of less important little shit to fix though.

Wow. Shitty. I parts tech I made friends with at my local dealership is cool and he's interested in what I'm doing with my car. I can't wait to take in there though for alignments and what not to see what they say. I think all the techs at the dealership in town rely solely on VADIS for repairs.

I had an experience like this a long time ago. When I first put an intake on my s70 I got into an argument with "volvo techs" over my cold air intake. They said that removing the little flap on the front of the header panel I removed was terrible and would cause all sorts of problems with the car.

I understand not wanting to work on someone else's pile of shit, but to refuse to work on something just because it looks a little different than what you expected is silly IMO.

I'm with Alden on this one. I only trust myself and one other person to work on my car (he has been a volvo master tech longer than I've been alive). There are very few people I would let work on it. (Although I'd let Johann, Mr. Winkey, or ihatespeedbumps touch it all they wanted  )

Yeah, local dealer has asked me to not bring them the wagon anymore. Apparently the Porsche brakes and other IPD stuff scared them enough.

But an indy ? blink.gif He doesn't have to worry about dealing with a warranty on a part that's not OEM, like a dealer would.

No love for Danny? :P

You and I differ a bit then. I don't trust myself either, but the car doesn't fix itself

I have confidence I could do the axles Justin but I'm a little scared to do the springs - especially alone.

I only pressed the issue to try to understand his reasoning and to inform him a little bit about how little he knew about Volvos for someone who has been working on only Volvos for so long

In general, I only let a couple of Volvo techs touch my car: a friend of mine at the dealership in Topsham, ME, Nick (Teknicktion) and Robert at Rawbear all of whom are dear friends of mine. Other than that, it's me, Ben and Hussein (and no doubt I trust some of folks on here like Justin and Danny etc.) but in this particular case, out in Arizona, it would have been nice to have this stuff done...oh well they aren't getting my money!

I was just a little put-off that this guy assumed that my car is just thrown together and things won't fit like they're supposed to...couldn't be further from the truth.
